The Marquette Redettes(52) Girls Basketball Team Faces the Gaylord Blue Devils(31) In the First Round of the Districts on Fox Sports Marquette

Gaylord, MI – February 27th, 2017 – It was time for a district battle as the Marquette Redettes faced the Gaylord Blue Devils. The scoring fired-up immediately, and the game was tied at 2-2 just after the first minute. Gaylord was having a difficult time with Marquette’s defense, and the Redettes forced four fouls midway through the first. Even though the game was neck-a-neck early on, Marquette soon began to dominate. With two minutes left, they led by seven points, and looked to keep on scoring. The action was fierce right up until the first buzzer, but the Redettes continued to play very well.

Gaylord found their offense after the start of the second quarter, and they narrowed their deficit to just five points in the first minute. It was 18-10 three minutes in, and the Marquette Redettes’ defense continued to stifle the Blue Devils. It all fell apart for Gaylord, and midway through the second quarter, Marquette had more than a ten-point lead. The baskets just kept on falling for the Redettes, and as the first half of play approached it’s close, Marquette was in full control of the game.

The game was all for the Marquette Redettes in the first half, but there was still time for the Blue Devils to make a comeback. The Redettes scored first, but halftime seemed to give Gaylord a needed boost. Points were traded back and forth between the teams, and that kept the Redettes’ lead at nearly 20 points for much of the quarter. As the last minute of the quarter ticked away, Marquette held steady on their lead, and looked to finish the game off in the fourth quarter.

Gaylord narrowed the Marquette Redettes’ lead to 16 in the first two minutes of the last quarter, but it was a seemingly futile effort. Marquette’s defense was just too tough, and their full-court press was very effective at stopping and of Gaylord’s offense. The Blue Devils continued to fight back, but the Redettes were burning as much time off the clock as possible. Marquette managed to get back to their 20-point lead with two minutes left in the game, and that all but sealed the win for the Redettes.
