Chelsea, MI- January 28th, 2017- As discussed in pre-game we knew the East Grand Rapids Pioneers get off to quick starts outscoring their opponents 33-7 in the first period. It was exactly what happened as the Pioneers get on the board first on a beautiful stretch pass just four minutes into the period. It seemed that goal would light a fire for the Redmen as they would apply the pressure for the second half of the period and draw a power play to end the period.
First period score:
East Grand Rapids- 1
Marquette- 0
Nothing would come of that power play as Marquette struggled to get it set up. As the Redmen looked flat in the start of the second period they were actually able to tie things up to the grit of Rory O’Connor. East Grand Rapids still continued their dominance of the period as was able to add another to re-take the lead on a 2 on 1. Marquette really responded after that one as a great shift by Hunter Doucette as he was able to get his 8th goal of the year. Just as the period was coming to a close and the Redmen were able to kill a penalty East Grand Rapids were able to take the lead again.
Second period score:
East Grand Rapids: 3
Marquette: 2
Marquette would start the period on a power play due to an unsportsmanlike conduct at the end of the second period but were unable to tie things up as East Grand Rapids did a great job of staying in their lanes. In the middle of the period Marquette took a bench minor of too many men and the Pioneers were able to capitalize extending their lead. The Redmen are a scrappy team but with three penalties in the third period East Grand Rapids was simply too much today.
