Marquette Redmen Basketball Team Defeats Houghton Gremlins 78-34
- Updated: March 2, 2017

Houghton, MI- March 2, 2017- In the second game of our doubleheader we would see the varsity team for the Marquette Redmen take on the Houghton Gremlins. Marquette would be looking to extend their win streak to 19 heading into districts next week.
It probable wasn’t the start the Redmen were hoping for starting the game with a shorter bench tonight. It was not a pretty first quarter for Marquette as the defense struggled a little bit and got themselves into a little bit of foul trouble. The offense was clicking, seeming not to struggle with the 2-3 zone Houghton likes to run. Still, Marquette led heading into the next quarter 19-13.
The second quarter would be a bit better for Marquette as the offense continued to roll. The Redmen would put up another 23 points in the frame but the defense would give up another double digit quarter to Houghton. Also fouls would continue to hurt them as the Gremlins would get 10 of their points in the half at the foul line. Though, Marquette would bring a good lead into the half up 42-25.
The Redmen could not have played a better quarter in this game. The defense would step up, the offense would continue to roll, and they would trim down on the fouls they would take. It would be the quarter they needed to separate themselves and put this game out of reach. Marquette would ad another 19 points and hold the Gremlins to only 9 as they led 61-34 heading into the fourth.
The fourth quarter would be more of a slow frame as Marquette was looking to eat the clock since they had this game in hand. The Redmen would start the quarter on a 17-0 run that would force a running clock with three minutes left in the game. The defense continued to shutdown the Gremlins in the fourth quarter as Houghton was unable to score in the fourth quarter.
