Friday Night Redmen Hockey – Marquette Redmen (2) VS Brother Rice (5) on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1 & 99.9FM
- Updated: January 20, 2017
Sault Ste. Marie, MI – January 20th, 2017 – For the third Sault Showcase of the year, the Marquette Redmen were set to take on the Brother Rice Warriors on a warm, rainy winter night. The first goal of the game was scored on a questionable call, when even the refs were unsure among themselves. The Brother Rice Warriors tied the game up at 1-1 after Marquette sent a man to the penalty box. With more than half of the first period gone, things were back to even, but both teams had serious scoring chances. The Redmen once again found themselves down a player after another penalty, but they were able to stop the Warriors.
First Period Score
Marquette Redmen: 1
Brother Rice Warriors: 1
It was a very close first period for the Marquette Redmen and the Brother Rice Warriors, but just a few minutes into the second, the Warriors took over the lead on a failed breakout pass. That seemed to demoralize the Redmen, and the coach could be heard yelling from the bench trying to encourage his players. Marquette was given a gift when a Brother Rice player committed a flagrant interference penalty, and that put the Redmen on the power play for the first time in the game. Penalties were a killer for the Redmen, and Brother Rice put their third goal of the game into the net on a nice feed from behind the net.
Second Period Score
Marquette Redmen: 1
Brother Rice Warriors: 3
Trailing by two goals going into the final period, the Marquette Redmen had a lot of ground to make up against the tough Brother Rice Warriors. At the end of the second period, the Warriors were called for a 5:00 minute major penalty, and that put the Redmen up a player for nearly five minutes. They took advantage of the opportunity and scored their second goal of the game, closing the gap down to one. The air was immediately let out of the tires of Marquette’s comeback drive when the Warriors scored the second goal of the period, bringing the score to 2-4. The Warriors would score one more time before the game ended with a final score of 2-5.
Final Game Score
Marquette Redmen: 2
