The Marquette Redmen Win Big Against Gladstone Braves 58-46 Tuesday Night
- Updated: March 1, 2022

Marquette, MI – March 1, 2022 – The Marquette Redmen played host to the Gladstone Braves Tuesday evening. This was the final conference match for both teams of the evening before the MHSAA District Tournament. The game was broadcast live and available online at Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9!
Q1: Gladstone won the tip opening the game. The Brave’s first possession ended in a turnover after a couple of shot attempts. Marquette’s first possession ended in the same fashion. The Redmen bounced back with a steal by Axel Vermaat that couldn’t get cashed in for points. Each team had an empty couple possessions, but David Eberhard was able to get to the charity stripe for Marquette after hitting his shot.
Eberhard capitalized on the three point play to give the Redmen the early lead. Kaden Gibbs was able to get the Braves on the board going off the glass with the right handed lay up. Gladstone’s offense had good ball movement until Logan Peterson picked the ball off and went the other way for the bucket to build Marquette’s lead. The following Brave possession was also empty as they turned it over yet again.

David Eberhard was able to splash a three pointer home the next Marquette possession. The Braves frustration was starting to show early as Logan Peterson recorded another steal and his shot was affected by Skylor Cayer slapping the backboard. Cayer was given a technical foul, and Marquette was able to cash in on both free throws by Eberhard who was in double digits halfway through the first. Cayer redeemed himself receiving a pass from Caden Downey for a lay up.
Jordan DeMay got his first points of the night off the feed from Eberhard. The Braves had their pockets picked yet again, this time by Axel Vermaat leading to yet another two points for the Redmen. Marquette held an 11 point lead until Caden Downey hit a shot for Gladstone. Marquette answered with a bucket from Jordan DeMay to bring the lead back to double digits to end the quarter.
Q2: Gladstone started the quarter by taking a charge to cause the Redmen turnover. The following Marquette possession saw Justin Jurmu get his first points of the evening. The Braves couldn’t get their offense going, as they turned it over yet again. Logan Peterson was able to field the pass inside and lay it up for another Marquette bucket. Another empty Brave possession led to Peterson drawing the foul the other way and going two for two at the free throw line, Marquette leads 23-7.
The Braves desperately needed a bucket but after a failed shot going out of bounds, Marquette had yet another chance to pile on their lead. The Redmen were able to get a lot of second chance opportunities with handling rebounds, but couldn’t find their mark with shots. After going back and forth for the next couple minutes with no points, Easton Clements ended the drought. Clements drove the lane to land the shot and also picked up the foul.

Easton Clements Free Throws
Unable to pick up the three point play, the ball went back the other way to the Braves. Gladstone still unable to find any rhythm whatsoever as they yet again turned it over back to the Redmen. However Marquette wasn’t doing much better in this second quarter. With both teams now in the bonus we saw each team headed to the line for free throws. Eli Berthaume of Gladstone was able to send home two free throws for the Braves’ first points of the quarter.
Halftime: Marquette 25 – Gladstone 9
Q3: The second half opened up with turnovers by each team. Marquette hadn’t seen senior and leading scorer, Jonas Bicik, on the floor the entire first half. He remained on the bench to start the third quarter. Neither team’s shots were hitting their mark in the sloppy early minutes of play. Marquette put points on the board first with David Eberhard hitting yet another shot.
Elliot Vitito got his first points of the night, and brought the Braves into double digits after hitting a three pointer. The Redmen looked to answer back to stifle any momentum. Jordan DeMay was able to cut inside to handle the pass, he went off the glass for another two for Marquette. The Braves hit another shot to bring their score deficit to 14 and trying to get wind in their sails.
Wyatt Lakenen was able to get the assist from DeMay to nail a three pointer, and eliminate whatever Gladstone momentum there was. Caden Downey sent home a long range two to try and claw back. The Braves were able to cause a Marquette turnover to get the ball back. Skylor Cayer capitalized on the turnover to send a fade away into the net. Marquette answered back with two points of DeMay. Downey followed that with another long range shot, this one behind the arc for three.

Marquette vs Gladstone
Marquette looked to stay dominant. David Eberhard drove the lane and went up strong to draw the foul, and get his shot to land. Eberhard cashed in on the three point play to bring his point total to 14 thus far. Drew Hughes answered with a three for the Braves to end the quarter.
Q4: The final eight minutes of play started with Gladstone getting possession. After an opening turnover, Eberhard added to his total going off the glass for two. Skylor Cayer found his mark for the Braves, but senior John Weber matched the two points for Marquette. Gladstone continued to miss shots, unable to ride the momentum of the final minutes of the third.
Jordan DeMay got himself into double figures with another two points for the Redmen. Drake Johnson got two for the Braves to follow up DeMay. Gladstone’s Downey got his fourth three pointer on the night, but Eberhard continued to play out of his mind. Eberhard landed the shot and picked up the foul, he converted the three point play and Marquette leads 48-31.
Both teams scored a bucket the following possessions. Easton Clements got his shot to go underneath while Kaden Gibbs scored for the Braves. Marquette’s Eberhard drove the lane and picked up a foul to send him to the line. After making both free throws he found himself with a season high in points. Gladstone continued to fight back with a shot from Johnson, and pesky defense on the other end of the court.
The tight defense couldn’t stop Eberhard has he continued to rack up his point total. Jordan DeMay followed that with a steal and bucket to keep the Marquette lead comfortable. Marquette senior Nick Olivier got himself in the scoring column in the final minutes of play. The Braves never gave up, and kept shooting but it was too little too late. The Redmen closed out the regular season with a big win against the Braves ahead of the MHSAA District Tournament.
