Marquette Redmen Close Regular Season With Win Against Sault Blue Devils, 45-32

Sault Ste. Marie, MI – March 3, 2022 – The Marquette Redmen wrapped up their regular season on the road Thursday night. The traveled to face the Sault Ste Marie Blue Devils in non-conference action ahead of the MHSAA District Tournament. Thursday’s game was broadcast live on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9!
Q1: The Soo won the opening tip to start the game with the first possession. The Blue Devils shaved a minute and a half off the clock, but couldn’t come away with a bucket. Marquette took things over on offense with David Eberhard scoring quick to give the Redmen the lead. Carter Oshelski came off the bench to provide a spark for the Soo with a three pointer splashing home. Marquette looked to answer back and regain the lead, but the following possession ended in a turnover.
Marquette trailed by one and pushed the pace. Wyatt Lakenen was able to receive the pass from Easton Clements and sent a three pointer up to give the lead back to Marquette. The Blue Devils answered with Dominic Hollaer scoring before the buzzer. The Redmen led after one, 7-5.

Q2: The Blue Devils had possession to start the final quarter of the half. Nathan Koepp drove the lane and picked up a foul splitting the pair of free throws to trail by one. Marquette answered with Eberhard laying in a basket to build the Redmen lead back to three. Easton Clements got his first points of the game, but the Blue Devils answered back immediately with a basket of their own.
David Eberhard added to his point total after drawing the foul. He went two for two at the line to open a 13-9 lead. Max Scott and the Soo answered with a three pointer. After a Marquette foul away from the shot, the Blue Devils retained possession. Luckily the Redmen defense was able to avoid any points off the foul. Marquette’s offense played hard keeping a fast pace. Easton Clements was able to get another basket and the foul was able to convert the three point play.
Carter Oshelski was able to pick the pocket of Clements and went the other way with it. After a Redmen foul, Jakob Davie found himself at the charity stripe going one for two. Marquette’s David Eberhard followed up with two free throws of his own, making both and building the Redmen lead. Oshelski looked to close in on the Redmen lead after drawing a foul to shoot a one-and-one, making one. Marquette was able to hold on to the lead going into the locker room.
Halftime: Marquette 20 – Sault Ste. Marie 16
Q3: Marquette had possession to start the second half, and Axel Vermaat opened up scoring with his first points of the night. Reilly Cox replied with a bucket of his own. Jordan DeMay quickly answered back with a basket as both teams were scoring at lightning speed. The game slowed down a bit as the Soo pulled up the reigns, but Marquette was able to cause a turnover.
The Redmen ran their offense and took their time finding Eberhard open for the basket. The Blue Devils Jakob Davie was able to handle a pass underneath by Max Scott for the bucket. Vermaat got a steal on the following Soo possession and went the other way for two. Callen Campbell got a steal of his own and finished at the net to keep things close for the Blue Devils.
Jordan DeMay stepped to the stripe for Marquette missing both, but Eberhard came away with the rebound and drew another foul on the put-back. Eberhard also missed both, but Clements was able to gather the rebound to keep Marquette on the offensive. Unable to get a basket, the Blue Devils went the other way with Jonah DeNuccio-McShane getting the bucket.
Marquette held a lead, but had a scoring drought as the Blue Devils clawed their way back within two. Although the Soo defense was problematic for Marquette, the Blue Devils couldn’t turn the turnovers into points. Marquette’s defense stepped it up as well by applying full court pressure. David Eberhard got to the line for free throws going one for two to make it a three point game.

Q4: Marquette looked to keep and build their lead in the final eight minutes of play. With Eberhard yet again at the free throw line early, he went two for two to make it a eight point game. Easton Clements followed it with a bucket after a Soo turnover. The Blue Devils were able to cut it to six after a bucket off the glass by Oshelski. After failed free throws by Marquette, the Soo’s Joe Gravelle was able to get himself in the scoring column.
The Redmen looked to regain momentum and was able to get a couple chances at points. After a couple offensive boards, Marquette wasn’t able to cash in. The Soo looked to close in and got a bucket to bring their deficit down to four. Marquette finally got things back on track with Eberhard getting a basket plus the foul.
The Soo answered with Dominic Haller drawing the foul and making his free throws. Marquette needed to regain momentum and did so with Wyatt Lakenen splashing home a big time three-pointer. Lakenen was able to get the next bucket of the game with going high off the glass and got it to fall to build the Redmen lead. David Eberhard continued with his impressive week getting himself 20 points after a made pair of free throws.
With under a minute left the Redmen defense was able to fend off the Soo. The Blue Devils couldn’t find the bottom of the bucket on their opportunites. Marquette ended the game by dribbling out the clock to walk away with the win to end the regular season.
