Redmen Girls Basketball Travel To Face Westwood Patriots

Westwood Inbounds The Ball

West Ishpeming, MIFebruary 2, 2023 The Redette basketball team was on the road Thursday night as they traveled to Westwood High School to take on the Patriots. Luke Ghiardi and Vanessa Briones had the call live on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9!

Marquette won the tip to open things up and finished their first possession with a Meghan MacPhee basket. Sienna Lingle followed that with a steal and score to put the Redettes up by four quickly. Megan Marta finally got Westwood on the board after hitting a three pointer. The Redettes and Patriots would go back and forth with Westwood hitting another three pointer, but Marquette maintaining the lead. Westwood would eventually take the lead with another three pointer for their third of the quarter. The Redettes would push the pace and hit a three of their own from Eliina Brazeau. A pair of free throws from Westwood would tie things up to end the quarter of play.

MacPhee would put Marquette up by three after she would hit one from beyond the arc to start the second quarter. Sienna Lingle would follow it with another steal and score to tack on another two. Westwood would hit a basket, but Meghan MacPhee would put the Redettes up six after a strong move underneath for the basket. The two teams continued to battle back and forth but a quiet quarter offensively. Marquette went into the half with the lead over Westwood.

Halftime: Marquette 24 – Westwood 18

Marquette would get the ball to start the second half of play. Julia Ott would draw the foul on their opening possession and make a pair of free throws to grow the Redette lead. Brooke Logan would follow that with a steal and going coast to coast for the basket. Megan Marta would get herself into some foul trouble as she would send Ott to the free throw line yet again, this time Ott would miss the pair. Lexi Olson brought Westwood within seven after a long three pointer found it’s mark. Marquette would bring their lead back to double digits after a MacPhee basket. The Redettes really opened things up in the third quarter and going into the final minutes of play with an 13 point lead.

The Patriots would get the first basket of the final eight minutes from Hannah Niemi. Marquette would match it with a basket of their own the following possession. Julia Ott would get the feed from Lingle to land another basket for the Redettes. Ott would have double digit scoring for the third straight game after hitting another pair of free throws. Marquette would lead by as much as 22 as the final minutes ticked away. Westwood would show glimmers of hope with a steal and score from Isabelle Marta. It would all be too little too late as the Redettes would run away with the victory.

FINAL: Marquette 47 – Westwood 34

The Marquette Redettes are back in action next Monday. They’ll be on the road heading to the Copper Country to face the Houghton Gremlins. The varsity match up is set for a 7:15 tip with Luke Ghiardi on the call live on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9!
