Marquette Redmen Hockey Outscores University of Detroit-Jesuit With 4-1 win

Trenton, MI February 3, 2023 – The Marquette Redmen took on The University of Detroit-Jesuit Friday afternoon at the Trenton Kennedy Recreation Center. Marquette was able to pick up their first win of the weekend Friday afternoon, tune in at 12:15 tomorrow 2/4 for the game.

First Period: The Marquette Redmen won the opening draw to start off Friday afternoons game against the University of Detroit -Jesuit Cubs. After the Redmen won the opening draw the Cubs forced a turnover and took it down ice where they were shutdown by Marquette. A few minutes into the game the Marquette Redmen picked up a power play from an interference penalty, giving the Redmen the chance to put one on the board. Ethan Phillips won a draw and seconds later launched a rocket of a wrist shot that found the back of the net, putting the Redmen up 1-0 halfway through the first. The defense of both teams continued to deny and shutdown any opportunities on net after the Marquette goal. After the first twenty minutes of play came to end Marquette led Detroit-Jesuit 1-0.

Second Period: The puck was dropped and Marquette wasted no time picking it up and taking it down ice as they looked to extend their lead over the Cubs. Marquette came out aggressive in the second period as they put four shots on net in just under two minutes. After laying a big hit that forced the puck loose a Cubs player poked in a bouncing puck to tie the game at one. The Redmen wasted no time trying to get the go ahead goal after the Cubs scored, putting a few shots on net that were denied by the goal tender. As the second period reached the halfway mark, Marquette was out-shooting the cubs 8-4 on the period. The Redmen picked up a short handed go ahead goal after Jake Garrow found the back of the net with a beautiful shot. Eleven seconds after Jake Garrow scored, Brock Taylor sent a pass over to Ethan Phillips who launched a shot that beat the goal tender putting the Redmen up 3-1. The period started off as a tie game but Marquette turned that around big time as they came out on top 3-1 headed into the final twenty minutes of play.

Third Period: The Cubs won their first opening face off of the afternoon as they looked to make a comeback on the Marquette Redmen. The Redmen had a huge opportunity that was shut down by a great save from the Cubs goalie. After denying the Redmen opportunity the Cubs began pushing the pace in the third to keep their hopes of a comeback alive. The third period hit the halfway point and there was a lot of back and forth action but neither team could get anything to go. Marquette slowed down their pace of play as they looked to kill time off the clock and walk away with the win. After a face off draw won by Marquette Brock Taylor put a shot on net that was rebounded off the goalie and Ethan Phillips was there to put it in, picking up his third of the afternoon to complete the hat trick. The buzzer rang to end the game and the Marquette Redmen walked away with a 4-1 win over Detroit-Jesuit.
