Redmen Basketball Secures Clutch 66-64 Victory Against Alpena

Marquette, MI – January 4, 2020 – The Marquette Redmen Varsity Basketball team took home a clutch victory against the Alpena Wildcats today on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9.
It was a tight game in the early going, though Alpena had the slight advantage. A John Thomson triple tied up the game at 11-11, but again the Wildcats inched out front at 15-13. An 8-0 run for Alpena extended their lead to 20-13 to give them their largest lead of the quarter.
A triple from Justin Jurmu at the buzzer cut the Wildcat lead to four with a score of 22-18 going into the second quarter.
The second started with the Redmen able to tie it up at 22-22 in the opening minutes as Marquette went on a 4-0 run. Alpena followed up with a 9-0 run to jump back out front though, as the Redmen struggled to break their streak.
Kam Karp sunk a triple to inject some life back into the offensive efforts of the Redmen to bring the score to 33-25. Lincoln Sager followed up with another Redmen triple to help keep their deficit within seven points, the score at 35-28 with just a few minutes to go.
The Wildcats remained tenacious in the waning seconds, however, jumping out to an 11-point lead at 30-28. Alpena remained in control with a 42-30 lead going into halftime.
The Wildcats stayed well out front early in the second half. A couple more Sager triples cut the Redmen deficit to seven points though. Another Redmen bucket rounded out an 8-0 run for Marquette to put the score at 49-44 behind Alpena.
A John Thomson triple cut the Alpena lead to two with under one minute to go. The Wildcats hung on and ended the third quarter with a 52-48 lead.
Alpena switched gears early in the fourth quarter, cultivating a nine-point lead as they regained their footing. Ty Lotterman helped cut that lead to five points with a couple of lay ups.
A Kam Karp triple with under one minute to go slashed the Wildcat lead to just three. Alpena gave up possession with just 25 seconds to go; Marquette used that opportunity to slash their deficit to just one.
With just six seconds on the clock, Ty Lotterman got the steal and fired it over to Karp. Karp put up a triple just before the buzzer to solidify an electrifying win for the Marquette Redmen, the final score 66-64.
The Redmen will be back in action on Tuesday, January 7th against the Escanaba Eskymos on 103 WFXD. Tune in at 7:00 pm for the pregame show, tip off is at 7:30 pm.
