Redettes Remain Undefeated In GNC With Win Over Kingsford 43-29!

Kingsford, MI January 27, 2022 – Both the boys and girls teams traveled to Kingsford for a doubleheader against the Kingsford Flivvers! Luke Ghiardi had the call with the Redettes kicking things off for the evening. The game was broadcast live on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9.

Q1: Kingsford won the tip and had the first possession of the game. The Redettes and the Flivvers went back and forth for the first ninety seconds of play and went scoreless. Ella Jezewski put the Redettes on the board first after she split a pair of free throws. Marquette implemented the press defense and caused and immediate turnover. Meghan MacPhee hit the first field goal of the night for Marquette.

The Flivvers had a rough go of it to start. The Redettes held the lead and caused four straight turnovers for Kingsford. Marquette could only capitalize on one of the four turnovers when MacPhee registered another two points for the Redettes. Kingsford just couldn’t get any offense going and continued to be forced to turnover the ball by the energetic Marquette defenders. Kingsford attacked the rim and were able to draw the foul to head to the charity stripe, but were unsuccessful.

Kingsford finally got on the board with a three point shot from Talia Wallis. Zoe Smith and the Redettes answered back with a three of her own. Kingsford picked up the pace and the enabled Terrain to hit an easy layup to bridge the scoring gap for the Flivvers. Terrain then headed to the line to tie things up but split the pair and Kingsford trailed by one, 7-6.

Q2: The second quarter of play opened up with Kingsford having possession. Paige Olsen was able to rattle home a three and give Kingsford the first lead of the evening. Marquette’s Maria Millado drove the baseline to lay it up and followed that with a quick steal off the inbound and got another two. Abby Terrain tied things back up for Kingsford, 11-11.

Marquette’s offense struggled to find a rhythm while Erika Malone was able to put the Flivvers up by three. The Redettes finally answered as MacPhee put in the lefty layup to make it a one point game. Wallace was able to land a jumper, but Meghan MacPhee answered immediately with one of her own. Marquette’s MacPhee played outstanding on both ends of the court to keep the Redettes within one.

Each of the teams were in the bonus to end the half. Kingsford’s Olson went two for two on the free throw line and the Flivvers led by three. Then with under :10 left Marquette’s Zoe Smith was fouled and went to the line to close the lead. Smith split the free throws to end the half.

Q3: The two teams went back and forth with no scoring in the opening minute. Zoe Smith was able to draw the foul and went to shoot free throws. She landed both of them and tied things up, 18-18. Paige Olsen took the lead back for the Flivvers after landing a long range three. Jezewski made it a one point game right away splitting the defense and laying it in. Olsen threw up another three but was short. Laura Bracket got the rebound and put it back in to build the Flivver lead.

Sienna Lingle found herself at the foul line for Marquette. She split the shots and brought the Redettes within two. Kingsford found themselves up by four after an up and over shot by Elaina Bortolini. Each of the teams found themselves in a bit of a dry spell going back and forth. Marquette’s MacPhee broke the drought and got herself into double digit scoring. Maria Millado followed that with a steal and the finish at the net to tie things up at 25.

Marquette finally got back on top when Millado went up strong and off the glass for the two points. Talia Wallis tied things back up after she landed a jumper for the Flivvers. Maria Millado drove the lane and drew the foul. She split the free throws to go ahead by one. The following possession Millado stole the ball away and landed another layup plus the foul. Millado couldn’t land the free throw, but gave Marquette the lead to close the quarter.

Q4: The final eight minutes opened up with Marquette having possession. The Redettes were able to really draw the fouls with their aggressive play. Millado landed herself at the charity stripe once again, and once again splitting the pair. Laura Bracket was fed the ball from Wallis to make it a two point game with the Flivvers trailing. Marquette’s Meghan MacPhee landed two points in the paint to build the Redette lead.

Sienna Lingle was able to cause a 2-on-1 with a steal and running back down court. She bounced the ball over to Millado to register another two points for Marquette. The Redettes led the Flivvers by six, 35-29. Maria Millado took things over in the game after blowing by a Flivver defender to get her 16th points of the game. The Redettes opened up a double digit lead after Millado put up yet another two points.

The Redette defense caused yet another turnover when Brooke Logan got the steal to feed MacPhee for a Marquette layup. Kingsford started fouling in the last ninety seconds of play. Maria Millado was the first to head to the line for Marquette. Millado landed both of her shots to end the scoring for the game.
