Calumet, MI – January 24, 2022 – The Marquette Redettes Girls Basketball team traveled up to Calumet on Monday night to face the Copper Kings. Facing the U.P.’s best team wasn’ t going to be easy, and the Copper Kings outscored MSHS 25-1 in the second quarter en route to a 64-31 victory. Michael J had the call live from Calumet on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9.
1st Half:

Calumet’s pressure made an impact early, resulting in an open lay-up for Laina Kariniemi to start the scoring. Marquette was determined to hang in tough, and took a 3-2 lead with a 3 from Zoe Smith. Tied 5-5, Calumet got back-to-back fast break buckets from Alexis Strom and Marybeth Halonen to take a four-point lead. Trailing 11-5 in the final minutes of the quarter, Maria Millado made a lay-up and Brooke Logan hit a 3-pointer for the Redettes to cut the deficit to 11-10 after one quarter of play.
End of 1st: Calumet Copper Kings 11, Marquette Redettes 10
Millado struck first in the second quarter with a bucket to give the Redettes the lead, 12-11. Calumet then took over the game completely, and went on to score 25 consecutive points. Kariniemi and Jana Loukus did the bulk of the scoring for the Copper Kings in the quarter, combining for 21 of the team’s 25 points. Trailing 36-12 in the final seconds of the half, Eliina Brazeau got MSHS on the board in the second quarter with a free throw.

2nd Half:

Smith had Marquette off to a good start to begin the second half with a pair of free throws, but a large deficit remained. The Copper Kings kept up their impressive offensive outing, and pushed the lead to 41-15. Millado scored down low for the Redettes, but another 3 from Loukus and a basket by Caitlyn Strom extended the lead to 46-17 with three minutes left in the third. Addyson Saunders nailed a jumper late in the quarter to add to the Redettes’ total, but the Copper Kings led by 35 with a quarter remaining.
End of 3rd: Calumet Copper Kings 56, Marquette Redettes 21

It was a low-scoring fourth quarter, and both teams shared the wealth of scoring to round out the game. Ari Holder made a shot, Saunders hit a free throw and Logan scored the game’s final five points to close things out. Carried by a strong second quarter, the Copper Kings cruised to a 64-31 win over the Redettes. Marquette drops to 5-7.
