Redettes Basketball Falls to Menominee Maroons 54-42

Menominee, MIFebruary 28, 2020 – The Marquette Redettes Varsity Basketball team fell 54-42 to the undefeated Menominee Maroons tonight on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9.

The Redettes sought an upset tonight as the undefeated Menominee Maroons looked to secure a 20-0 season.

A Rayna Warchock triple got things started for the Redettes to give Marquette the 3-0 lead. Menominee answered quickly as an Emma Anderson triple rounded out a 7-0 run for the Maroons.

Warchock went one for one at the line and then followed up with a double off of a Maria Millado steal to collect all six of the Redettes’ points in the first period, the score 7-6 behind Menominee.

The Redettes moved out front for the first time since the opening seconds at 8-7, though a bit of foul trouble for Marquette helped put the Maroons back in the lead at 10-8. Menominee took a 12-10 lead going into the second period, the Redettes on their heels.

The Maroons extended their lead to four points at 16-12, but an Aspen Michelin double put the Redettes within two. An Anderson triple for the Maroons, however, helped Menominee to a 19-14 lead. Marquette struggled to stay within striking distance as an Erin Barrette triple gave the Maroons their largest lead of the game thus far, the score 24-16.

Menominee got out to as much as a 10-point lead, but a Maddie Carter double helped slash the Maroons’ lead to 26-18 going into the half.

Menominee’s Emma Anderson was tough to stop tonight; she opened up the second half with a triple to put the Maroons at 29-18 early. Sofia van den Ende followed up to go two for two at the line to help slash the Redettes’ deficit.

Marquette started to find their footing offensively, but the Maroons had an answer at every turn, making it tough for the Redettes to make real headway. Millado put the work in and converted a three-point play to get within nine points of the Maroons. She followed up with a steal and a layup, slicing their deficit down to just seven points.

The classic tough Redettes’ defense helped keep Marquette competitive for a spell, but the Maroons’ defense proved just as strong. An 8-0 run for Menominee late in the third opened up a 44-29 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The Maroons stayed in control in the early going of the final quarter of play. A Millado triple helped cut the Menominee lead to 14 points. There was no shortage of effort and heart from the Redettes, but the Maroons were unwilling to let go of the prospect of an undefeated season.

It was all Menominee in the final minutes as they solidified a perfect 20-0 season with their 54-42 victory over Marquette.

The Redettes will take on Petoskey Monday, March 2nd on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9. Tune in at 5:30 pm for the pregame show, tip off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
