Redettes Basketball Bests Negaunee Miners in OT, 75-72

Marquette, MIFebruary 25, 2020 – The Marquette Redettes Varsity Basketball team defeated the Negaunee Miners 75-72 in overtime on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9.

Senior players were celebrated before the game got underway on Senior Night for the Marquette Redettes. Energy crackled in the air as these rival teams readied themselves for an unmissable match-up.

Negaunee came out of the gate with a 4-0 run in the first quarter. Sofia van den Ende struck first for the Redettes to make it 4-2. Chloe Norman of the Miners answered, but Maddie Carter turned around and put up a double for the Redettes to make it 6-4. Carter then went for two for two at the line to tie it up at 6-6.

Marquette moved out front at 11-9, but Negaunee was right on their heels. It was a physical first period as both teams committed several fouls in the early going. The Miners reclaimed the lead in the final minute to take a score of 15-11 into the second quarter.

After a little give and go early in the second, Marquette’s Averie Kelly put up a double to tie it up at 17-17. Negaunee moved back out front at 20-18 with two minutes to go.

A Hannah Young bucket put the Redettes within two points of the Miners once again at 22-20. Chloe Norman answered straight away and then followed up with another bucket just before the buzzer to help the Miners to a 28-23 lead going into the half.

Maddie Carter started things out with a huge triple to put the Redettes back within two points, the score 28-26 in the early going of the third quarter. Negaunee pushed back out to 32-28, but another Carter triple put the Redettes back within two. It didn’t take long for Marquette to take the lead at 33-32.

The Miners again reclaimed the lead, going 39-35 in short order. Averie Kelly converted an and one opportunity to make it 39-38. Kaleah Puskala then put up a jumper to stay within one point of the Miners at 41-40. A Maria Millado double gave the Redettes the lead once again with a score of 42-41 going into the fourth quarter.

A Chloe Norman triple in the early going of the fourth put the Miners back out front. Aspen Michelin, off of a steal from Sofia van den Ende, converted an and one opportunity to tie it up at 47-47 soon enough.

The Miners moved back out front, but not by much. Rayna Warchock was able to tie it up at 52-52 after converting another and one opportunity for the Redettes.

Marquette just could not reclaim and hold on to the lead for a spell. Kaleah Puskala, however, put up a massive double to finally give the Redettes a 55-54 lead with one minute to go. Millado extended the Redettes’ lead going two for two at the line.

Norman could not convert on an and one opportunity, failing to tie things up for the Miners. Michelin turned around to go two for two at the line to give Marquette a three-point lead. Norman put up a double to get Negaunee back within one point.

Michelin went one for one at the line, but Norman answered with a double to tie it up at 60-60 at the buzzer and force overtime.

The drama continued in OT. Negaunee jumped out to a 63-60 lead. It didn’t take long for the Redettes to tie it back up at 63. The Miners were then able to open up a five-point lead with just 45 seconds to go. van den Ende cut the Redettes’ deficit to three with a successful bucket.

Millado came up with a steal and went two for two at the line to get within one point. van den Ende came up with a steal of her own for a lay up and one at the line. The effort at the stripe did not go, but Millado came up with the offensive rebound. It was a wild turn of events as Millado went two for two at the line to solidify a 75-72 victory for the Redettes.

The Redettes are back against the Menominee Maroons on Friday, February 28th on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9. Tune in at 7:00 pm for the pregame show, the game starts at 7:30 pm.
