Redettes Basketball Defeats Petoskey Northmen 47-30 in District Play

Petoskey, MIMarch 2, 2020 – The Marquette Redettes Varsity Basketball team extended their post-regular season with a 47-30 victory over the Petoskey Northmen on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9.

Petoskey’s Sydney Mann put up a triple to start, giving the Northmen an early 3-0 lead. They jumped out to 5-1 to stay out front in the early going. Aspen Michelin followed up to convert a three-point play to make it 5-4. It wasn’t long before the Redettes found themselves in the lead for the first time in the game, the score 6-5 with four minutes to go.

Maria Millado had the offensive rebound and put back to make it 11-6 for the Redettes with less than two minutes to go. The Northmen were gaining on the Redettes in the closing seconds, a Kalyn Bromley double getting Petoskey within one point of Marquette. The Redettes would take a thin 11-10 lead into the second quarter.

The second quarter opened up with a 6-0 run from Marquette, including Millado sinking two at the line to make it 17-10. The Redettes stayed out ahead of the Northmen, though Petoskey again started to close in during the final moments of the half.

The Redettes’ success at the stripe gave them a 24-18 lead going into the second half. Millado went 9 of 10 at the line in the second quarter alone.

An Aspen Michelin double opened up the third quarter to make it 26-18. The Redettes opened up a 30-20 lead at one point, but the Northmen slashed it to 30-25 as Marquette suffered a scoring drought for a spell.

A Brooklyn Michelin layup broke the Petoskey 5-0 run. Averie Kelly followed up with a double to take the Redettes back out to a 34-25 lead. The Northmen experienced a bit of a scoring drought of their own as Marquette improved to 36-25 going into the final quarter.

The Redettes protected their double digit lead early in the fourth. Maddie Carter converted a three-point play to bring the score to 43-29. Petoskey hung around for most of the game, but the Redettes really pulled away in the final minutes of the game.

Marquette put an end to the Northmen season with their 47-30 victory tonight. The Redettes will move on in District Tournament play.
