Redettes Basketball Defeats Kingsford Flivvers 47-34

Kingsford, MIJanuary 10, 2020 – The Marquette Redettes Varsity Basketball team defeated the Kingsford Flivvers 47-34 tonight on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9.

The opening moments of the game were fast-paced as both teams battled for the lead. Maria Millado struck first, putting the Redettes out front early at 2-0. The Flivvers then inched out ahead at 4-2. A 5-0 run for Marquette, however, put the Redettes back out front at 7-4.

Flivvers’ player Maddy Holmes put up a bucket to get Kingsford within one point of the Redettes. Marquette responded quickly as Millado put up two, followed by an Aspen Michelin double for a score of 11-6 just before the buzzer. The Flivvers were able to snag an extra point at the line, so the score settled at 11-7 going into the second quarter.

The Redettes jumped out to a 18-9 lead early in the second quarter as Marquette began to pull away from the Flivvers.

Later, a Sofia van den Ende lay up put the Redettes at 20-11. The winds of change were blowing, however, in the final two minutes of the quarter. The Flivvers were able to cause a few turnovers and capitalize on the pressure with an 8-0 run to make it 22-20 behind Marquette going into the half.

The Redettes took home the victory tonight.

The third period saw the Redettes fighting to maintain their lead. Kingsford’s Maggie Strehlow tied it up at the line at 24-24 in the early going. Millado then answered first with a lay up and then a triple to put her at 18 points for the game thus far and a five-point lead for the Redettes at 29-24.

Kingsford’s Brooke Kriegl put up a triple to cut the Redettes’ lead to two at 29-27 with a little over a minute to go in the quarter. A little rust may have been a problem at times for Marquette as their Christmas break was extended due to a game reschedule last week. The Redettes had not played anything other than a scrimmage for over three weeks until tonight. A 5-0 run for Marquette late in the quarter, however, put the Redettes out at a 34-27 lead going into the final quarter of play.

An Aspen Michelin triple in the early going of the fourth quarter put their lead back out to 10 points. The Flivvers fought back  a bit, but a van den Ende triple a little later put the Redettes back out in front with an 11-point lead and four minutes to go in the game.

The Redettes really opened up their lead late in the final quarter at 45-30. It was full steam ahead to their 47-34 victory as the seconds, and second chances, ticked away for the Flivvers. Kingsford was the comeback kid throughout this game, but the Flivvers could not quite sneak past the Redettes tonight.

The Redettes will be back on Tuesday, January 14th against the Escanaba Eskymos on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9. Tune in at 6:30 pm for the pregame show, tip off is at 7:00 pm.
