Marquette, MI – November 29, 2024 – The Kirkwood Ice Rink was electric tonight as Marquette High School Hockey returned to home ice to face the Houghton Gremlins in the first of a back-to-back series. After a tough loss to Escanaba last weekend, the Sentinels were determined to bounce back and start this doubleheader with a win. Broadcasting live, Joe Gaffaney and Larry Carey captured all the action on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1 & 99.9, bringing fans every thrilling moment of this showdown.

First Period:

The opening period was a defensive battle, with goalie Parker Nevenhoven stealing the spotlight. With an incredible 19 saves, Nevenhoven kept Houghton at bay, giving Marquette time to find their footing. However, possession remained a challenge for the Sentinels, and the younger players were tasked with stepping up to match Houghton’s relentless pace. Despite the tension, neither team managed to score, leaving fans on the edge of their seats.

Score: Marquette 0 – 0 Houghton

Second Period:

The second period was action-packed as Houghton broke the stalemate in dramatic fashion. In just four minutes, the Gremlins netted three goals, including a stretch pass by Teegan Tapani that slipped past Nevenhoven. Marquette rallied during a power play, with Lucas Belkowski scoring a much-needed goal to reignite hope. However, Houghton quickly countered with another goal, extending their lead.

Despite the scoreline, the Sentinels continued to battle, and a beautifully coordinated play by Seth Sandstrom and Brody Sheldon resulted in Marquette’s second goal. As the period ended, the Sentinels trailed behind, allowing the Houghton Gremlins to continue making scores but they showed flashes of resilience that had fans hoping for a comeback in the third period.

Score: Marquette 2 – 6 Houghton
