Marquette Redmen Hockey Defeats Lake Orion 3-1
- Updated: November 19, 2022

Birmingham, MI – November 19, 2022 – The Marquette Redmen hockey team got their first victory of the season Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 win over the Lake Orion Dragons. After dropping their first game of the year 4-2 to Birmingham Brother Rice the previous night, Marquette capped off their downstate swing with a good result against the Dragons.
The opening minutes of the game were very back-and-forth, but neither team generated any quality scoring chances until Marquette handed Lake Orion a power play with a too many men on the ice penalty. The Dragons were then able to fire a string of shots on goal, but Redmen goaltender Parker Nevenhoven stood tall and enabled Marquette to kill the penalty. Lake Orion would keep the momentum though, and at 12:19 of the first period, Sam Hanes would beat Nevenhoven with a wraparound and give the Dragons the lead with a power play goal. It didn’t take long for Nash Riipi to even the score for Marquette though, as he found the rebound from a Jake Garrow shot and buried it past Dragons goalie Ethan Parraghi with 48 seconds to go in the period.
End 1: Marquette 1, Lake Orion 1

Marquette vs Brother Rice the previous night
Marquette’s Rylan Ragusett took a tripping penalty just a few seconds into the second period, but even a man short, the Redmen sustained the pressure with which they ended the opening frame. After killing the penalty, Marquette continued to put pressure on the Dragons, and at the 10:29 mark it paid off as Tucker Welch scored to give the Redmen a 2-1 lead. Marquette had several chances in the remainder of the period, but Parraghi kept the puck out of the net for Lake Orion, and the teams went to the locker room with the score 2-1.
End 2: Marquette 2, Lake Orion 1
The third period began evenly, with both teams having chances that they didn’t convert on, until Ian Sheltrow scored his first goal as a varsity player at the 5:22 mark to give Marquette a 3-1 lead. From there, Marquette played cautiously, relying upon their defense to lock down the Dragons. Parker Nevenhoven made some big saves down the stretch, and the Marquette Redmen skated to their first victory of the season.
Final: Marquette 3, Lake Orion 1
The Marquette Redmen will next take the ice on Tuesday, November 22nd, when they host the Houghton Gremlins at Lakeview Arena. John Thomson and Joe Gaffney will have all the action on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1 and 99.9, and online at foxsportsmarquette.com.
