Sault St. Marie, Mi August 20th, 2022– This Saturday, Cora Anderson made her first impression as a senior with an impressive 24 kills five digs and four aces at the Sault St. Marie Invitational Tournament!

The volleyball season has finally returned and teams from all across the U.P came together to celebrate it in this season-opening tournament. Marquette split six matches into pool play and then lost to Houghton 2-0 with a score of 27-25 and 25-14 during their quarterfinal match, sending them home.

MSHS’s head coach Ann Crandell-Williams has a lot of hope for the girls playing this year, stating “We have a really young team this year in terms of varsity experience, and all in all they had a good day with lots of growth.”  Ann also said “We served consistently, played strong defense and ran a good middle attack. We dropped a couple of tight sets with strong teams, which doesn’t show with our win/loss record.”

Marquette lost against the Soo both sets with scores of 15-25 and 18-25, but switched the tide when facing Rogers City, saving the sets with scores of 25-17 and 27-25. The sets were split during their match against Alpena, with scores of 25-27 and 25-21.

Ann and her team are ready to take down the opposition this upcoming season thanks to the insight they gained this weekend “We learned a lot about things we want to continue to work on. It was a great opportunity to assess the teams we will be seeing in districts this year.”

We left the day encouraged that we can make an impact this season if we keep working hard.”

There were many other statistical leaders on Marquette’s team such as Alyson McCarthy with 38 assists and 11 digs, Hailey Ridolphi with 23 digs, 8 kills and 5 aces, Kaycee Karp with 18 digs, 7 assists and 4 aces, Emma Sanderson Torres with 12 digs, 10 kills and 3 aces, Laura Barsch with 11 assists and 6 digs, Jessica Gooch with 12 kills and 2 blocks, and Hetty Fuess with 9 kills and 5 digs.
