Marquette Wins Homecoming Against Kingsford on 103.3 WFXD

Flivvers kick off

Marquette, MI – September 17, 2021 – The Marquette Redmen celebrated homecoming on Friday. They hosted the 3-0 Kingsford Flivvers in GNC action. The game was broadcast live on 103.3 WFXD!

1Q: The Marquette Redmen received the opening kickoff but was unable to move the chains as they punted the football after 3 offensive plays. The punt would eventually be muffed and recovered by the Redmen but then were unable to capitalize on the opportunity. The Redmen selected to go for it on 4th down and 4 from their own 17 yard line but were shut down by the Flivvers. Defense littered the rest of the 1st quarter as both teams were scoreless heading into the 2nd quarter.

2Q: After a scoreless first quarter, the Marquette Redmen scored 28 points in the third quarter. The first touchdown of the game came early in the 2nd quarter as Redmen quarterback Austin Ridl connected with Redmen Wide Out Owen Beauchamp for a 28 yard strike. Marquette 7-0. Kingsford took over but turned the ball over as Redmen defensive back Ethan Richards intercepted the football. The Marquette Redmen then took a 14-0 lead as Ridl connected once again with Beauchamp for a 36 yard touchdown.

The Redmen defense continued to dominate as they blocked the Flivvers next punt, defensive back David Eberhard returned the football to the Flivver 20 yard line. Redmen running back Desmond Mullen then set up Marquette with a 1st and goal from the Flivver 3 yard line after rushing for 17 yards. Running back Dustin Lohfink punched in the 3 yard rushing touchdown to give the Redmen a 21-0 lead.

For the third consecutive defensive possession, Marquette forced another turnover as Redmen defensive back Justin Jurmu sacked Flivver quarterback Michael Meneguzzo on 4th down and 3 to set the Redmen up at their own 47 yard line. Ridl continued to sling it in the first half as he threw a 50 yard touchdown pass to his fellow wide receiver Nate Benninger to give his team a 28-0 lead with 4:25 remaining in the quarter. 40 seconds later the Flivvers finally found themselves on the board after Meneguzzo found wide receiver Nic Nora for a 61 yard score. 28-7.

Marquette and Kingsford would score one more touchdown in the quarter to add 48 total points in 12 minutes of play. Lohfink punched another 2 yard touchdown for the Redmen as Meneguzzo found Nora for the 2nd time for the Flivvers. The Redmen missed their extra point ending the half with the 34-14 lead.

3Q: The Kingsford Flivvers opened the quarter with the football but could not gain any ground on the scoreboard, they punted after 3 offensive plays. It didn’t take long for Marquette to find themselves back in the end zone as Ridl rushed for a 3 yard scamper, Marquette lead 41-14. Kingsford responded minutes later as Meneguzzo found Zach Persons for a red zone touchdown. Ridl and Eberhard lead the way on the next Redmen offensive possession as a 37 yard completion set up the 1 yard connection to put Marquette up 48-21 heading into the 4th quarter.

4Q: 3 total touchdowns were scored in the 4th quarter as Kingsford tried making a last second effort to get back into the game, the Flivvers struck with a short TD pass from Meneguzzo to Persons on a 4th and goal to get back in within 20. Desmond Mullen then put the final nail into the coffin as he rushed for a 3 yard score to the Redmen up 55-27. Despite the loss, Flivvers quarterback Michael Meneguzzo threw for his 5th passing touchdown to end the scoring as he found receiver Troy Watt at the end of the game.

The Redmen will be back in action next Friday as they travel to face the Gladstone Braves. The game will be live on 103.3 WFXD with the Elder Agency pregame show at 6:20 PM.
