Marquette Spoils Homecoming for Gladstone on 103.3 WFXD!

Gladstone, MISeptember 24, 2021 The Marquette Redmen hit the road this past Friday. They traveled to match-up against the Gladstone Braves. The game was broadcast live on 103.3 WFXD!

1st QTR: Marquette received the opening kickoff to start the game. The Redmen moved their way down field with help from a 23yd run by Nate Bettinger. Quarterback Austin Ridl was able to find Bettinger to give him another 18yd reception. After another few plays the Redmen found themselves in a fourth down scenario. They kept the offense on the field and Ridl was able to hook up with Justin Jurmu on 4th and 4 for a 15yd touchdown. The extra point wasn’t succesful, but Marquette led Gladstone 6-0.

Gladstone had trouble getting their offense going to start. After three straight plays they were lined up to punt on 4th and 6. A costly penalty brought the Braves closer to the first down marker. They took the punt team off and Nate Young was able to push his way for a Gladstone first down. Young would then keep his legs moving racking up a 17yd rush on the following play. Marquette’s defense would prove to be too tough however. They would bring the Braves to another fourth down, and they would not convert.

2nd QTR: Marquette took over from the turnover on downs. A mix of Desmond Mullen and Austin Ridl running their way through the defense brought up a fresh set of downs to get the quarter rolling.  However Gladstone would get the ball back as Marquette wasn’t able to put it in the endzone. The Braves wouldn’t do much as they would just go three-and-out.

The Redmen came out with high octane offense with Ridl finding David Eberhard for a 25yd pitch-and-catch. Nate Bettinger would follow that up with hard fought 5yd reception, but Marquette would find themselves at fourth down and five yards to go. Quarterback Austin Ridl would keep the ball in his hands, and scramble for 14 yards and a fresh set of downs for the Redmen. He would follow that up by finding Owen Beauchamp, casted hand and all, for a 6yd touchdown.

Cole Potier of Gladstone would be the workhorse for the team. With some hard runs he was able to keep the chains moving for the Braves. Gladstone quarterback Nate Young would try to scramble for some yardage, but it would be fourth and goal for the home team. Redman Wyatt Kuhlman would come up big with a tackle at the line of scrimmage causing a turnover on downs.

Marquette’s offense would continue to march down into Gladstone territory. With the help of a 34yd run by Dustin Lohfink the Redmen brought themselves into the redzone. Unable to punch it past the goal line, Marquette elected to kick a field goal on fourth down. The kick by Ryland Kohler was succesful, and brought the score to 16-0 in favor of Marquette headed into halftime.

3rd QTR: Marquette kicked off to the Braves to start the second half. Gladstone would “throw away” their first series as Marquette’s Ethan Richards recorded an interception on the very first play of the half. After a couple of back and forth series, Marquette started their drive in Gladstone territory. On a third and long scenario, David Eberhard would gain 32yds and be brought down at the Brave’s four yard line. Desmond Mullen would muscle his way through the middle and into paydirt. The Redmen build their lead to, 23-0.

Gladstone once again just wouldn’t be able to string together plays and move the chains. Turning the ball over on downs back to the Redmen. Dustin Lohfink would bring Marquette past midfield and knocking on the door once again. Ridl would link up with Eberhard for a 24yd touchdown recpetion. The point after was good and the lead continued to grow, 30-0.

Brave’s running back Cole Potier would cough up the ball and Redmen Desmond Mullen would recover and find himself inside Gladstone’s five yard line. Bettinger would get his turn in the endzone and following the extra point, Redmen started the running clock with a score of 37-0 going into the final quarter.

4th QTR: Gladstone wouldn’t go down without a fight as the final minutes of the game were underway. Brave’s quarterback Nate Young would go to the air and find Michael Brazeau for a 49yd touchdown. The two-point conversion was no good, but they were finally on the board and stopped the running clock. Marquette would keep their foot on the gas as they took over. Wyatt Kuhlman gained 17yds on the ground and the Redmen followed that up with a 35yd touchdown by Beauchamp. The Braves would get the ball back once again, and Nate Young would make the most of Marquette gave him with a 72yd quarterback scramble for the touchdown.

No other team would score before the end of the game and Marquette would be traveling home with a win.
