Marquette Redmen Hockey Gets Weekend Sweep Vs Port Huron After a 5-1 Win

Sault Ste. Marie, MIJanuary 25, 2020 – The Marquette Redmen Varsity Hockey team earned a 6-2 victory against the Port Huron Northern Huskies on 97.5 GTO. The Redmen would get the win, 5-1!

In the first period, the Redmen wasted no time getting on the board.  At 3:08, Owen Riipi knocked in a shot from the blue line, the shot had so much force, the refs could not find it initially as it wedged itself into the goal. Gaetano Cammarata with the assist.

Port Huron would make an equalizing goal from Logan O’Flanagan at 9:45, but the Redmen would get back-to-back goals in the final three minutes of the period from Jack Sides, Luke Guertin  assisted on the first of the two goals, Jacob Peterson had the assist on the second.

After one period, 3-1 Redmen. Shots were 8-7, Port Huron, no penalties in the period.

The second period saw some heated exchange as neither team got on the board, but as Joe Gaffney would say “There is a game within the game going on down there.” Both sides took at the other team, but neither would find the net as the defensive slug fest waged on.

After two, 3-1 Redmen. Shots were 8-5 Marquette, two penalites on Port Huron, one on the Redmen.

Defense would continue to dominate in the third period, both teams continued to battle. Port Huron would get a chance to get on the power-play for the first time with 4:39 to go in the game. Marquette would be the one to capitalize as Cole Ranta would score on an assist from Jack Sides. After the goal, Port Huron would commit back-to-back penalties to give the Redmen a five-on-three for about a minute and 30 seconds, Ansel Frost would sink a shot from Cammarata to put the Redmen up 5-1 with just over two minutes to go in the contest.

Final, 5-1 Redmen.
