Marquette Redmen defeat the Saginaw Heritage Hawks in overtime

Midland, MI – December 2, 2022 – The Marquette Redmen were able to power through in the back and fourth battle tonight giving them a win in overtime against the Saginaw Heritage Hawks.

First period: The opening puck drop went to the hawk, the Redmen’s defense was able to force a quick turnover of the puck. Both teams wasted no time laying out some big hits in the early minutes of the game. Each team has a good amount of shots on goal but cannot get anything to go with 11 minutes left in the first period. The Redmen are doing a good job of keeping the hawks on their heels and on the ropes as we head into the later minutes of the first. The Redmen got a power play opportunity with 3 minutes left in the period, but were unable to do put a goal on the board. After a back and forth battle neither team were able to find the back of the net ending the first period 0-0.

Second Period: The hawks won the puck drop to begin the second period and look to move the puck down ice into the Marquette defensive zone. after going scoreless for the first ten minutes of the second period, Owen Turner of the Hawks was able to find the back of the net putting the hawks up 1-0 halfway through the second. After the goal the Redmen won the toss and moved the puck down ice looking to get one back and even the game. Marquette pushed the puck deep in hawks defensive territory looking for the equalizing goal, carter put a nice shot on net but was denied by the post. Conner Stade intercepted a puck taking it deep into hawk territory beating the goalie and finding the back of the net to give the Redmen their first goal of the season and Stades first of the season. After the Redmen goal the hawks looked to retake the lead and did so successfully with a goal from Brett Wobio giving the hawks a 2-1 lead. The Marquette Redmen were able to shutdown a hawks power play opportunity late in the second. The action packed second ended with both teams having 8 shots on goal and the hawks lead 2-1 over the Redmen.

Third Period: The Redmen won the drop to start off the third and wasted no time taking the puck into Hawks territory. The Redmen picked up a power play in the early minutes of the period and look to convert on the opportunity to bring the game back to even. During the power play the Redmen were able to put a few shots on goal but were unable to find the back of the net. the Redmen were able to find the tying goal with a shot from Jake Garrel who was assisted by Colin Menicheck putting the game at 2-2 headed into the later minutes of the third. Ni ether teams were able to find the go ahead goal after a very back and forth effort by both sides, sending the game into overtime.

Overtime: Marquette won the opening draw to start off overtime after a great effort in regulation by both sides. The Hawks picked up a five minute major giving them the man advantage early in overtime. Another penalty on Marquette for tripping gave the hawks a 5 on 3 opportunity. Tucker Welch picked up the puck and took it all the way down scoring a shorthand goal and winning this hard fought battle in overtime for the Redmen.
