Kingsford, MichiganJanuary 26, 2017 – The Marquette Redmen continued their winning streak against the Kingsford Flivers on Thursday night in Kingsford.  The Redmen have now won 10 in a row, and are one step closer to clinching a Great Northern Conference Championship.

The Redmen include 12 different players in their rotation when fully healthy.  With the plethora of fresh legs at their disposal, Marquette is not afraid to pressure their opponents.  They used full court pressure to suffocate the Flivers who had a difficult time getting anything easy offensively.

The game started slowly offensively for both teams.  Neither team scored in the first 2 minutes of action. Marquette’s Alex Duval finally got points on the board when he hit 2 free throws to give Marquette a 2-0 lead with 5:46 remaining in the first quarter.

Kingsford was able to keep up their good defensive performance and find ways to score. They recorded the next 2 baskets to gain a 4-2 advantage.  Marquette Freshman Joe Ostrowsky answered with a 3-pointer and another bucket to give Marquette the lead back at 7-4. Kingsford got the deficit to just 1 at 7-6, and then the Marquette 3-point shooting showed up. Marquette hit 3 threes during a 12-4 run to take a 9 point lead. Luke Ogea was fouled on a 3-pointer with no time remaining in the first quarter. He hit all three free throws and Marquette lead 22-14 after the first quarter.

The 2nd quarter is where the Redmen pulled away.  The pressure gave Kingsford all sorts of fits. The Redmen held the Flivers to just 4 points on 4 free throws for the entire quarter.  Marquette again shot well from deep, hitting 5 threes in the 2nd quarter alone; brothers Joe and Jackson Ostrowsky hitting 2 each. Marquette outscored Kingsford 19-4 in the 2nd quarter to take a 41-18 lead into halftime.

The third quarter was more of the same for the Redmen on defense.  Kingsford struggled to score the basketball and could only register 5 points in the 3rd quarter.  Marquette ran more of their offense in the 2nd half, not looking to push or score quickly.  The Redmen cruised to a victory, 72-30.

With the win, the Redmen improved to 10-1 on the season and a perfect 5-0 in the Great Northern Conference.  They look to continue their winning streak when they take on the Westwood Patriots on Tuesday, January 31st at home.  Tune into Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9 and foxsportsmarquette.com for all the action.
