Marquette Redettes Win on the Road Against Escanaba Eskymos on 103.3 WFXD!

Escanaba, MINovember 30, 2021 – The Marquette Redettes kicked their 2021-2022 basketball campaign against the Escanaba Eskymos. The game was broadcast live on 103.3 WFXD!

1Q: The game started with the Redette’s Meghan MacPhee kicking off scoring. Maria Millado added on with a steal leading to a lay-up not going in, but drawing the foul. She would make broth free throws to give Marquette the 3-0 lead.

Escanaba would get on the board with Keira Maki making a short distance shot. The Eskymos would get the ball back after another set of made free throws from Marquette, and Maki would put up another two to close the Marquette lead to one.

The Redettes continued their attack offensively, going on a 7 point run before Escanaba’s Mari Bink hit a 3-point shot. Marquette’s defense shined early on keeping the Eskymos at bay, closing the first quarter out at 16-7.

2Q: The second quarter started with Bink making a field goal to cut their deficit down to 7. After a pair of free throws made by center, Ella Jezewski, Escanaba started to gain some momentum offensively and defensively. Maki would drive down the lane to make a tough shot while drawing in the foul, making the extra free throw attempt and cutting the lead down to 19-14.

Eskymo’s crowd came to life towards the end of the second quarter after Madison Monkevich hit a crucial 3-pointer to pull Escanaba to with 4.

Escanaba would go on to make a total of 15 points in the second quarter, ending the first half with the Redettes leading the Eskymos 24-22.

3Q: To start off the second half, the Redettes went on an 11-2 run that nearly lasted the whole quarter. Field goals from Zoe Smith and Siena Lingle started it off, with Marquette continuously attacking the rim drawing fouls left and right. 5 of the 11 points came from free throws alone.

Both teams had problems with fouls in the 3rd quarter sending both of them into the one-one foul bonus. But it was the Redettes that made most of the opportunities at the free throw line.

The third quarter ended with resounding momentum for Marquette taking their lead to 7 points to the fourth quarter.

4Q: The tale of the fourth quarter came down to the domination of Marquette’s defense. Limiting the Eskymos to a mere 6 points. Millano’s lockdown defense was on full display in the final minutes of the game. With key defensive plays and breakaways, the Eskymos were not able to get back on track and played frantically, consistently turning the ball over.

The game ended with a clear victory by the Redettes, 51-36.

The Joe Boogren Player of the Game was awarded to Maria Millado with her dominant display on both sides of the ball. Last years GNC’s defensive player of the year scored 18 points and had multiple steals throughout the game.

A honorable mention for the Redettes was Meghan MacPhee. She ended the game with a solid 12 points.
