Marquette Redettes Basketball loses in nail biter to Grandville 42-37 on WFXDH2

Marquette, MI – December 4th, 2021 – The Marquette Redettes basketball squad lost in a close game against the Grandville Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon. Michael Williams had the call from Petoskey on WFXDH2.
1st Half:
It was a slow start for the Redettes to start the game as they couldn’t find their shots and quickly fell to a 0-8 deficit against the Bulldogs. The first points for the Redettes would come from Meghan MacPhee and that bucket cut the deficit to 2-8. Zoe Smith would cut the deficit even more when she went to the line and drained both free throws. The Redettes finished the first quarter off with a 4-0 run after Julia Ott made both off her free throws to cut the lead to 6-8.
End of 1st: Marquette 6, Grandville 8
The Redettes came out much stronger in the second quarter as Meghan MacPhee hit a jumpshot to tie the game 8-8. Julia Ott would steal the ball and dish it to Meghan MacPhee who hit the two, which gave Marquette their first lead of the game. It was a strong free throw shooting quarter for the Redettes as Maria Millado went 4/4 from the line and Brooke Logan went 2/2 from the line.
End of 2nd: Marquette 19, Grandville 16

2nd Half:
Millado got not only her first field goal of the game but the first points of the second half for the Redettes. Claire Gregwer would cut the Redette’s lead with a bucket of her own. MacPhee would answer with a long range two to extend Marquette’s lead to 24-18. Julia Ott would hit a nice backboard shot to keep the Redette’s lead up. The third quarter started to get away from the Redette’s as they began to foul and turn the ball over. Emma Perez would hit a shot to round out the third quarter and give the Bulldogs momentum heading into the final quarter of play.
End of 3rd: Marquette 28, Grandville 27

Tip-off approaches for the Redettes game vs Grandville
The Redettes continued their strong free throw shooting game as Zoe Smith went 2/2 from the line early in the fourth. Millado drained a pair of free throws to give the Redettes the lead back. It was a back and forth quarter but the Redettes hit a small cold streak. Marquette got the ball back with a little under a minute left but a travel was quickly called. Marquette was forced to start fouling and Gracie Rakoski sealed the game for the Bulldogs with two free throws.
Final Score: Marquette Redettes 37, Grandville Bulldogs 42
