Marquette Redettes Girls Basketball Loses Close One to Westwood 38-30 on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9
- Updated: February 3, 2022

Marquette, MI – February 3, 2022 – The Marquette Redettes girls basketball team was back on the court after six days off to host the Westwood Patriots! In a back-and-forth defensive battle, Westwood finally gained separation in the fourth quarter and came away with a 38-30 victory. Michael J had the call live from Marquette Senior High School’s Barb Crill Gymnasium on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9.
1st Half:

The Redettes warming up before Thursday’s game.
Megan Marta scored the game’s first points and gave the Patriots a 2-0 lead early. Maria Millado was on fire with a quick six points, and Meghan MacPhee filled up the rest of the points in the first quarter for a team total of 10. The Patriots got baskets from Mallory Leece and Alyssa Prophet, and they were able to tie the game at the quarter’s end.
End of 1st: Marquette Redettes 10, Westwood Patriots 10
Westwood jumped out to a 15-11 lead early in the second quarter thanks to full-court pressure, but the Redettes wouldn’t go away. Both teams went back-and-forth from that point until halftime, with MacPhee having a nice quarter and Zoe Smith nailing a 3-pointer for Marquette. However, the Patriots took a slight edge in the half’s final minute, and held a 23-20 lead going into the break.
Halftime: Westwood Patriots 23, Marquette Redettes 20
2nd Half:

Marquette huddles up around coach Ben Smith.
Millado got going once again to start the third quarter, scoring the first four Marquette points. Natalie Prophet scored down low for Westwood, keeping the Patriots in front. Westwood led for the entire quarter, but couldn’t pull away from the Redettes. The third quarter was all about defense, with Westwood outscoring Marquette 8-7. That boosted the Patriots’ lead to 31-27 with one quarter remaining.
End of 3rd: Westwood Patriots 31, Marquette Redettes 27
With the game coming down to the wire in the fourth, Westwood went to star player Natalie Prophet when it mattered most. The Patriots defense held the Redettes scoreless for the first five minutes of the quarter, and Prophet scored all five Westwood points in that span to extend the lead to nine. Smith scored Marquette’s first points of the quarter with just over two minutes left, cutting the deficit to 36-29. Millado added one free throw, but in such a low-scoring game, six points was a lot to overcome. The Redettes had their chances, but came up just short in a defensive battle.
Final Score: Westwood Patriots 38, Marquette Redettes 30
NEXT GAME: The Marquette Redettes girls basketball team returns to action on Monday night, where they will host the Houghton Gremlins! Travis Nelson will have the call live on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9, beginning at 6:40 p.m. with The Elder Agency Pregame Show, and tip-off to follow at 7 p.m. Go Redettes!
