Marquette Redettes Fight Hard Yet Fall Short Against Houghton, 64-48

Marquette, MI – February 7, 2022 – The Marquette Redettes played the number two ranked in the U.P. Houghton Gremlins on Monday evening. The game was broadcast live on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9 with Travis Nelson on the call.
Q1: The game opened with Houghton winning the Jon’s Auto opening tip-off and Paige Sleeman opening it up right away with a three-pointer that found it’s mark. Meghan Trewella followed things up for the Gremlins with a steal and score to put Houghton up by four. Marquette’s offense had difficulty finding their pace as the Houghton defense caused turnovers in each of their first three possessions.
Marquette tired to feed the ball inside to Meghan MacPhee early on but couldn’t get anything to land. Paige Sleeman was left open against to drain another three to build on the Gremlins lead. There was plenty of physical play underneath the net between the two teams. Redette Maria Millado was able to draw the foul while driving the lane, but neither of her free throws landed. Meghan MacPhee got Marquette on the board with a three-pointer of her own to wind down the Houghton lead.

Houghton answered with their third three-pointer of the quarter in the following possession. Marquette’s Millado found herself at the charity stripe yet again, but split the pair to make the score 11-4 in favor of Houghton. Bella Lorens hit a nice jumper for the Redettes to close in on the Gremlin lead. Houghton’s Meghan Trewhella picked the pocket of a Redette and drew the foul on her way up to the net, she split the pair and the score sat at 12-6.
The Gremlins kept their shooting ways going as Myah Campioni registered a three for herself. The Marquette defense tried to stay aggressive against this high octane Houghton offense. Trewhella got her fifth points of the night with an easy layup. Brooke Logan answered back for the Redettes as she nailed a three to bring the Houghton lead down to eight points.
Q2: The quarter opened up with the teams exchanging turnovers. Marquette had great looks at shots, but couldn’t get any to fall in the opening minutes. Sleeman got the first points of the quarter to stretch Houghton’s lead to 10. The Gremlin’s Tiia Wickstrom got her first points of the night with an easy layup. Marquette was held scoreless for the first four minutes of the quarter until Brooke Logan found an opening underneath to lay it in.
Maria Millado followed that up with a put back bucket to cut the Redette’s deficit down. After another rebound by Marquette, Brooke Logan was able to feed the ball down to Millado who was able to find the bottom of the basket. Gwen Markham was able to keep Houghton’s lead comfortbable with a layup for Houghton. However, Logan had the hot hand for Marquette as she threw another three into the net to make the score, 23-18 in favor of the Gremlins.

Redette Offense
Millado was able to steal a Gremlin pass and go all the way for the finish to cut the deficit to three. Houghton was able to get the ball down low and draw the foul to bring Annika Peterson to the free throw line. She went two-for-two at the stripe and the Houghton lead went back to five.
Halftime: Houghton 25 – Marquette 20
Q3: The Redettes opened the half with possession, and started with MacPhee going up for the lefty layup and closing the gap to three points. Houghton answered back with Stella Wickstrom landing a jumper to make the score, 27-22. Marquette had the ball stolen away the next possession and Houghton’s Annika Peterson landed a two pointer. Ella Jezewski got redemption for Marquette with a jumper of her own that found it’s mark.
Paige Sleeman scored yet again for the Gremlins with a layup, but Zoe Smith answered back immediately for the Redettes. Smith landed a three when Marquette needed it most to keep the game close. The Gremlin offense found Wickstrom down low to put it up for another two points. The game stayed at a quick pace back and forth. Annika Peterson landed her 11th points of the night for Houghton. Trewhella added on to her total as well, with another shot landed for the Gremlins.
Marquette tried to fight back from the double digit deficit. Millado dished to Bella Lorens to put Marquette back in the mix. The Redettes stole the ball back the next possession and Brooke Logan was left alone at the arc to nail another three-pointer. Marquette’s defense kept the pace up with Millado getting a big time block and caused another turnover.’
Houghton got it back together quickly with Sleeman splashing another three to keep Houghton ahead. Marquette’s Brooke Logan found herself at the free throw line. Logan split the pair and Marquette trailed, 42-33. Sleemen had the ball stolen away by Logan who went the other way to put up another two points for the Redettes and brought their deficit to seven. Paige Sleeman brought the lead back to double digits with another three to end the quarter.
Q4: Scoring started with Gwen Markham getting a bucket plus a foul for Houghton. The free throw was no good for the three point play. Maria Millado had a chance to answer back with a set of free throws which found their mark. Stella Wickstrom drove the lane for Houghton and drew another foul against Marquette. She split the free throws and Marquette found MacPhee in transition for a short range shot that landed.

The Gremlins turned the ball over yet again that The Redettes cashed in on with a Maria Millado bucket. Houghton got a two on one opportunity and Trewhella was able to go off the glass for the bucket. Marquette’s defense stayed strong when they could catch up in transition. The teams went back and forth with failed shots and turnovers. Marquette’s MacPhee found herself smothered by the Gremlin defense. MacPhee found an outlet in Millado who was fouled on her shot attempt. Millado split the shots, with the last shot rebounded by Houghton.
Trewhella got Houghton back to a 12 point lead with a mid-range shot. Marquette couldn’t keep up in transition as Annika Peterson landed yet another shot for the Gremlins. Marquette looked to claw back from the double digit deficit. Zoe Smith was able to find her mark with a three pointer for the Redettes. Marquette’s defense stayed tough but couldn’t come down with key rebounds down the stretch.
Annika Peterson added on to Houghton’s lead after drawing the foul and nailing both free throws. The Redettes answered back with another Smith three pointer. The game went into a foul game as the Gremlins looked to play “keep away” from the Redettes. Trewhella went to the line for a one-and-one. She landed both as the Gremlins continued to pull away for the win.
