Marquette Falls to Traverse City Central in High Scoring Game on 103.3 WFXD

Traverse City, MI September 2nd, 2021 The Marquette Redmen were on the road for Thursday night action. They faced off against the Traverse City Central Trojans. The game was broadcast live on 103.3 WFXD and online.

1stQ: Marquette received the opening kick-off and started their drive in Trojan territory. After the stout Traverse City defense showed their teeth early, the Redmen were forced to punt. Before they were able to kick it away the punter had to recover a high snap, but was unable to get out of the endzone causing a safety. The Trojans took the lead early, 2-0.

Traverse City started their first offensive series. They ran a lot of misdirection out of the backfield and made their march down the field. Once inside the redzone and looking to score, the Trojans ran a read-option, but miscommunication led to a fumble. The Redmen were able to recover the fumble and take over deep in their own territory.

After another Marquette 3-and-out the Trojans were able to find their way into the endzone. A punt led Traverse City to run four plays for 48 yards finishing the drive with a Carson Bourdo touchdown. The Trojans build on their lead, 9-0.

2ndQ: Marquette started the quarter with a fourth down conversion by Redmen Austin Ridl to Jordan DeMay for six yards. Ridl would follow that up with a precise strike to teammate David Eberhard for 21 yards landing them at the Trojan one yard line. The Redmen would then have to endure an unfortunate series of events. Austin Ridl would fumble the snap but quickly recover it. That would lead to Marquette running an option play that ended in a sack. After another incomplete pass the Redmen would attempt a field goal only to be blocked.

The Trojans would start their march down field. Quarterback Josh Burnham would look to throw only to be picked off by Marquette’s Ethan Richards. He would end his return at the Traverse City 35 yard line. Austin Ridl would look to regain some ground on the scoreboard by throwing downfield. The pass would end up as a tip-drill scenario only to be brought down by David Eberhard for a 21 yard touchdown. Marquette finally got on the board trailing the Trojans, 9-7.

Traverse City would keep their foot on the gas as they chipped away at the Redmen defense making their way in the redzone. Trojan quarterback Josh Burnham would finish the drive with a score from about four yards out putting his team up, 15-7.

After the Redmen were unable to make anything of their next series they had to punt away to the Trojans. With time winding down in the half, Traverse City made their way into Redmen territory. Unable to punch it into the endzone with the time left on the clock, they elected to kick a field goal. After splitting the uprights the Trojans build their lead to, 18-7 to end the first half.

3rdQ: Traverse City came out of the locker room ready to receive the second half kickoff. Once caught the returning Trojan lost the football and was recovered by Marquette. However, the Redmen weren’t able to do anything with the turnover giving it back to Traverse City after playing all four downs.

The Trojans kept it on the ground with Burnham running for 23 yards followed by Seabase making his way into Marquette territory with a 42 yard gain. Following a few more plays the quarterback, Burnham, was able to find paydirt once again to put Traverse City up, 25-7.

With the game getting away from them, Marquette was looking to close the gap. Justin Jurmu was able to pull down a pass from Ridl for a 39 yard reception putting them into Trojan territory. The Redmen would take to the sky once more, this time for a touchdown to Owen Beauchamp. Marquette able to close the gap a bit with a score of, 25-14 . The Trojans would waste no time getting that score back and keeping their lead comfortable, 32-14.

As the Redmen got another offensive series going they were able to punch it in with a Jordan DeMay touchdown reception for 11 yards. Closing the Trojan lead to, 32-21.

Traverse City continued with their powerful run game. Seabase was able to break off a huge run putting the Trojans in the redzone yet again. The Marquette defense was playing stout on the goal line bringing up a 4th down for Traverse City Central. Being so close to the endzone the Trojans went for it on 4th down, and Seabase finished what he started and built his team’s lead to, 39-21.

Marquette couldn’t get anything going on their next series and was forced to give it back to Traverse City Central. The Trojans would yet again find the endzone, but this time through the air. Burnham connected to Bourdo for 17 yards and padding their lead to, 46-21.

4thQ: The Trojans didn’t let up at all in the final minutes of play. Burnham hit Bourdo for a 33 yard touchdown pass. The Redmen found themselves down by multiple scores, 53-21. The Redmen, playing for pride at this point, never gave up. David Eberhard was able to hit paydirt once again for Marquette with a 14 yard reception from Austin Ridl.

Traverse City Central would pull their starters after the score, but that wouldn’t stop them from scoring. The Trojans made their way down the field to punch another score in to put them up, 60-28 over the Redmen.

Without much time left there wasn’t much action either as the Redmen leave the field losing to the Trojans with a final score of, 60-28.

The Redmen are back on the field on Friday night as they travel to Escanaba to face their GNC rival Eskymos. The game will be broadcast live on 103.3 WFXD with the Elder Agency Pregame Show starting at 6:20pm and kickoff at 7pm!
