Marquette Boys Varsity Falls To Traverse City Central In Double Overtime District Semifinal Match 78-75

Marquette, MiMarch 8th, 2023 The Marquette Boys Varsity basketball team fought hard Tuesday night against Traverse City Central Trojans in their District Semifinal match. Michael J was on the scene for Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9

Anthony Ribel of Traverse City Central started the match off with a point.  Jackson Jurmu fought back for Marquette, tying the match before bringing the Miners lead to two. After some back and forth,  Marquette continued to climb. MacPhee scored as well as Quinell who scored two points from the free throw line as well. The Trojans fought back, cutting Marquette’s lead down to a point. Jurmu reached double digits for the night with another three pointer. Jurmu scored another two pointer, despite Jack Hogan’s attempts to steal the lead. MacPhee brought Marquette to a lead of four before a timeout. After the timeout, Wyatt Lakenen brought Marquette to a score of eighteen before the buzzer. 18-12

Anthony Ribel started off the second quarter as well, cutting down Marquette’s lead by two. Jacob MacPhee shot a two pointer to combat Ribel. Hogan of Central scored as well. Anthony Ribel was injured but was able to stay in the match. Wyatt Lakenen scored a three pointer straight off the bench. Ribel was sent to the free throw line and scored twice. Clements scored his first three pointer of the night afterwards, bringing Marquette to a score of twenty-five. Ribel scored his first three-pointer of the night to fight back. Jan Van Den Ende brought Marquette back to an eight point lead. After a timeout, Jurmu scored twice at the free throw line, ending off the quarter. 31-23

Kyler Sager had the first two points of the half, starting off strong before the Trojans’ Hogan who scored a three pointer. After lots of back and forth, Sager scored followed by Jurmu who scored twice at the free throw line. Ribel scored a three point play despite contest from Clements and Jurmu. MacPhee scored off of a put-back shortly afterwards. Clements followed with a three pointer that had nothin’ but net.  Jurmu scored an off-the-glass layup after some combat from the Trojans. Ribel scored a free throw, followed by Jurmu who scored again off the glass to end the quarter. 43-37

Jacob MacPhee was first to score in the fourth quarter with a two pointer. Ribel scored twice at the free throw line, as well as Brayden Halliday. MacPhee scored twice at the free throw line shortly afterwards. Wyatt Lakenen brought Marquette to a score of fifty with a three pointer. Smith from the Trojans answered back with a three pointer. Halliday scored once at the free throw line afterwards. Hogan scored a three pointer as well, cutting Marquette’s lead down to one before a timeout. After the timeout, Quinell scored a three pointer for Marquette. The student section screamed after seeing his shot. Ribel scored a point at the free throw line afterwards. Quinell scored a layup as well, bringing Marquette to a score of fifty-five. Quinell scored another two pointer. Ribel scored a three-point play, cutting Marquette’s lead down to one again before a successful free throw shot from Quinell. MacPhee fouled out of the match afterwards.  Miller from Traverse City central scored a point from the free throw line as well. Ribel scored off the glass, stealing the lead  for the Trojans for the first time with 59.3 seconds left in the match. Clements tied the match, leading to overtime after a timeout. 60-60

Overtime was intense. Ribel scored four points within the first minute of overtime. Van Den Ende scored a two pointer shortly afterwards. Ribel furthered the Trojans lead with two free throws, reaching an individual score of thirty-four points. After a timeout, Sager scored a three pointer tying the match at sixty-seven points. The student section erupted after Sager’s shot. After lots of back and forth, the match continued into double overtime. 67-67

Double overtime was insane! Hogan from the Trojans was first to score with a three pointer. Jurmu scored an off the glass layup, bringing Marquette within a point of Traverse City. The Trojans refused to lose, widening their lead to four points before Jurmu scored a three pointer. Ribel fought back with Halliday, bringing the Trojans back to a lead of five. After a timeout, Jack Hogan was fouled out of the match. Jan Van Den Ende was sent to the free throw line, and scored once off the back of the iron. After a timeout, Clements was able to put down a put-back, resulting in a timeout. Clements was fouled out of the match after the timeout. Anthony Ribel scored once at the free throw line, bringing the Trojans to a three point lead before yet another timeout. After some back and forth,  Traverse City Central ended off the match winning the District Semifinals. 78-75
