Marquette, MI – October 2nd, 2025 – After coming up short in three of the last four years, West Iron County has claimed the 2025 U.P. Division II Girls Tennis Championship. The Wykons have a strong history in championship play, having finished first or second a total of thirty-one times. Their performance yesterday was outstanding, as they won five of the eight flights to secure the trophy.
The Division II Championship took place in Kingsford, with six teams competing for the title. The final team scores were as follows: West Iron County (18), Norway (13), Ishpeming (13), Iron Mountain (4), and Munising (1).
Grace Smith from West Iron County won the Singles 1 flight as a sophomore, avenging her loss in the Singles 2 from last year’s championship. Norway’s Ella Wojtowicz claimed the title in Singles 2, while Erin Kolbas of West Iron County took home Singles 3. Finally, Norway’s Jessa Rossier took home the title in Singles 4.
In doubles competition, West Iron County dominated, however, Norway’s doubles team of Emily Carlson and Myah Gilroy was determined to prevent a complete sweep. The Wykons did secure victories in the other three doubles flights: Destiny Lemery and Aubrey Richardson won in Doubles Flight 1, Julia White and Olivia LaMay took the victory in Doubles Flight 2, and Marlee Benson and Rochelle Bear claimed victory in Doubles Flight 4.
Although the Hematites did not win any flights, they finished second in six of the eight flights, contributing to their tie for second place overall. Jason Juno spoke with the Wykons’ head coach, Jen Schive, who commented on the win: “Amazing, absolutely amazing what they pulled off. We won some, we lost some, but in the end, we are a team and we’re a U.P. championship team. I’m pretty proud of that. I couldn’t have asked for anything more from them today.”
