Right out of the gate you could tell this game was going to be a hard fought battle. Brighton came out with a full court pressure defense that seemed to stifle Marquette. The teams would go back and forth for much of the first quarter trading the lead until Brighton took over the final couple of minutes. The Bulldogs would come out with the first basket of the second quarter but after that the Redettes would get hot. Especially, from beyond the arch, sinking back to back to triples. Once again the lead would change numerous times but thanks to some big three point shots from Stasha Warchock and Ellie Hicks, Marquette led 27-26 at the half.
The second half would be a lot of the same. These two teams were really in a battle. The lead would change so many times in this game, I could not keep track. Any time one of these teams went on a run, the other would take a time out, adjust, and come up with a run of their own. If there wasn’t a run it was simply because both teams traded blows back to back. The fourth quarter did not start the way the Redettes would have hoped. Brighton started the the quarter on a 10-1 run. Marquette would recover re-gaining the lead with a minute left due to some big free throws. The Redettes would never relinquish that lead and become champions again at the Petoskey Invitational with a 55-49 victory.
Sydney Kivi was your tournament MVP after a big performance this weekend. The Marquette Redettes take on the Gladstone Braves Tuesday night. You can hear Luke Ghiardi give you the call on 97.5 GTO.
