Houghton, MI – February 16th, 2017 – In another highly-anticipated game between the Marquette Redmen and the Houghton Gremlins on Thursday. Both teams had good records, but the Redmen were again crippled by illness. The Redmen had a great start to the first period, and it was apparent that their game earlier in the week was a necessary wake-up call. The Gremlins only had one good scoring chance in the first period, and that was thanks to Marquette’s excellent defense in front of the net. As the first period began to wear down, both teams were neck-a-neck, and neither team would have a clear advantage into the second.First Period Score

Just over two minutes into the second period, the Marquette Redmen got onto the scoreboard first on a one-timer shot from the top of the circles. The Redmen had their first penalty of the game called on them just a short time later, but they were able to hold off the Gremlins while they were down a player. Despite both teams having some sizable players, there wasn’t a lot of physical play in the first half of the game. The Redmen netted their second goal of the game on an even-strength shot from just in front of the net. As the second period’s final minute started, it looked like Marquette would only have to fight the Gremlins off for one more period.

Leading by two goals over the tough Houghton Gremlins, the Marquette Redmen only had to hang on to the lead for one more period. Even though the Redmen were missing multiple players due to illness, the rest of the team stepped-up to fill in the gaps. Things got a bit hairy for Marquette when they were called for a penalty, and that allowed the Gremlins to score their first goal of the game. Nearing the halfway point of the final period, it was still Marquette’s game, but play was starting to get chippy. The frantic play continued to increase as the minutes came off the clock, but Marquette was able to stifle Houghton’s offense. The Redmen did an excellent job killing time on the clock, and that allowed them to take home the win.
