Kingsford, MI – January 3rd, 2017 – The Marquette Redmen once again faced off against the Kingsford Flivers, this time away from their home ice. The Redmen immediately looked to be stronger than the Flivers, and the majority of the first half of the first period was spent in the Kingsford zone. At just under eight minutes in, the Redmen went on their first power play of the game, and Marquette put shot after shot on the goal. After the penalty ended, something seemed to click with the Flivers, and they began playing on the same level as the Redmen. Marquette committed their first penalty late in the first, but Kingsford was unable to convert the advantage into a goal. With just a minute left in the first, the Redmen scored an insurance goal that put them up 2-0 over Kingsford.

The game started off very well for the Marquette Redmen and they found themselves up two goals after the first period, giving them some room to breathe. Even though the Redmen were playing a great game, the Flivers had several chances for fast breaks early in the period that could have resulted in goals if not for the Redmen’s defense. The Flivers committed their second penalty of the game, and that gave the Redmen another chance to extend their lead just past the midway mark of the second. It was a relatively quiet remainder of the period, with neither team scoring. With just over 30 seconds left in the period, it was the Redmen’s first real chance to score a goal in the period, but they were unable to put the puck in the net.

All of the Marquette Redmen’s lines were playing a spectacular game, and they held the lead going into the final period. It was an interesting first half for the period, with both teams committing penalties within 30 seconds, and that made it a 4 on 4 situation. Just seconds before the 4 on 4 ended, the Kingsford Flivers finally found their offense and scored on a 2 on 1 fast break, taking advantage of the open ice. With the scoring gap at only one goal, the final period was much more frantic than the first two. With three minutes left in the game, the Redmen found themselves once again down a player after a cross checking penalty, and that meant that Marquette would have to play 4 on 5 for two of the last three minutes. Scare after scare gave the Marquette coaches audible heart attacks in the final minutes, but they took home the win 2-1.
