Cross-Town Hockey Action as the Marquette Redmen(8) Battle the Negaunee Miners(0) on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1 & 99.9FM
- Updated: January 5, 2017
Negaunee, MI – January 5th, 2016 – It was another freezing night in the Negaunee ice rink as the Marquette Redmen and the Negaunee Miners fought it out on the ice. Both teams seemed tentative to make any plays early in the game, instead opting to test each other before getting things underway. Midway through the first period, the score was still tied at 0-0, but Marquette got onto the scoreboard first on a great shot from the top of the circles. With one minute left in the first period, the Redmen continued to hold a narrow lead, and that’s how the period would end.
First Period Score
Marquette Redmen: 1
Negaunee Miners: 0
Literally just seconds into the second period, the Marquette Redmen put in their second goal of the game, and that put them up two goals over the Negaunee Miners. Joe Phillips added a third goal to the Marquette’s total on a power play goal after an AWESOME save from Dylan S. At 7:32 into the second, the Redmen added another goal to their total, and that forced the Miners to replace their goaltender in hopes of stopping the Marquette offense. It was an impressive second period for the Redmen, and by the time the second buzzer sounded, they increased their lead to four points.
Second Period Score
Marquette Redmen: 4
Negaunee Miners: 0
The Marquette Redmen were looking spectacular going into the final period against the Negaunee Miners, but the game wasn’t over yet. They held a lead of four points, but the Miners started to use their size to push the Redmen around the ice. Dylan S. continued to have an excellent game, making multiple huge saves to keep the Miners’ score at zero. Just before the halfway point of the final period, Colin Gaffney scored his second goal of the night, making it 5-0. With just under six minutes left in the game, the Miners forced a Marquette player to commit a penalty, and that gave them a slight glimmer of hope. The Miners’ power play ended before the time expired when they got chippy and had a 10-minute penalty called on them. Hunter D. scored the sixth goal of the game for Marquette, the third power play goal of the game, and that brought things back to full strength. Spencer S. scored just seconds later off of a great feed from his brother, which was the final dagger for the Miners. Joe Phillips scored the eight goal of the game, and that put the mercy rule into effect, ending the game at 8-0.
Final Game Score
Marquette Redmen: 8
Negaunee Miners: 0
