Marquette, Michigan – December 30th, 2016 – The Marquette Redmen Hockey Team were ready to end the year with a victory when they took on the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils at home in the second round on Friday afternoon on Fox Sports Marquette. After a tough loss to the Blue Devils on Thursday, the Redmen were fired up for a win on Friday afternoon, but the first period would be quiet for the most part, much like Thursday’s game. Ethan Jones made several great moves to beat multiple defender to give the Redmen their first scoring chance, but he was unsuccessful. Just five seconds before the end of the first, Marquette reached the scoreboard first, and they would hold a 1-0 lead going into the second period.First Period Score

The start of the second period for the Marquette Redmen was another quiet period, and the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils couldn’t find their offense from the previous night. Marquette continued to play penalty-free hockey, and that allowed them to stay with the Blue Devils. Midway through the period, there was a huge hit on a Redmen player, and despite the crowd’s enthusiasm, no penalty was called. It seemed as though the refs were content to watch the game happen, and it appeared that they doing their best to stay out of the game. No further scoring took place in the second period.

Holding a slim lead going into the final period of hockey for the weekend, the Marquette Redmen were leading by a single goal, but within the first minutes of the period, the Blue Devils evened the score at 1-1. In a reversal of fortune however, just a few minutes later Marquette once again took the lead on a screened shot that found the goal. Tanner Phillips got his fourth goal of the year after the Blue Devils pulled their goalie, and the game would end in nearly the opposite fashion as Thursday night’s game.
