Marquette Redmen Hockey Defeats Negaunee Miners 8-0
- Updated: January 4, 2018

Marquette, MI – January 4, 2018 – The Marquette Redmen defeated the Negaunee Miners by a score of 8-0 on Thursday night, in a game that was broadcast live on 103 FXD and online at wfxd.com. Marquette, coming off of a dramatic overtime victory over the Saline Hornets, were able to carry that momentum into their game against the Miners and come away with the win.
The Redmen wasted no time in the first period, as Joey Phillips put the puck past Negaunee goaltender Nolan Corwin just 1:22 after the opening puck drop to put Marquette ahead 1-0. Marquette kept the pressure on, and just over five minutes later Tanner Phillips took a pass from Joey and found the net for the Redmen’s second goal of the night. Under one minute after Tanner’s goal, Marquette’s Nick Leafers added one of his own and made the score 3-0 in favor of the Redmen. At the 13:45 mark, Colin Gaffney made the score 4-0 on a great individual effort, and that was the score at the end of the period.
The second period also began quickly for Marquette, with Ryan Baldwin making the score 5-0 at the 3:41 mark. Sean O’Connor added the sixth Redmen goal at 5:43, and just under a minute later, Jaden Lessard made the score 7-0 in favor of Marquette. Ethan Jones increased the lead to eight goals with just over 5:00 to play in the second period, resulting in a running clock. The mercy rule ended the game after the second period, and the final score was 8-0 in favor of Marquette.
With the win, the Marquette Redmen improve to 6-6 on the year, and will next take the ice in Traverse City on Friday, January 12 during the Traverse City Showcase Tournament. You can listen to that game live on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9 or online at foxsportsmarquette.com.
