Marquette, MI – July 14th, 2026 – This week on the Big Local Sports Show, we welcomed two head coaches from the Negaunee Little League program as both prepare their teams for the Michigan Little League State Tournament. Joining us were Major Division head coach Joe Dost and Junior Division head coach Joey Hermes.
We opened the show by catching up with Coach Joe Dost, who made a return appearance on the program. He recapped an exciting season for his Major Division squad, discussed the team’s postseason journey, and looked ahead to the challenge of competing against the best teams in Michigan. Coach Dost also talked about the fundraising efforts the team is undertaking to help offset travel and meal expenses for the trip downstate, while sharing how fans can support the team and follow along throughout the tournament.
In the second half of the show, we welcomed first-time guest Joey Hermes, head coach of Negaunee’s Senior Division All-Star team. Hermes reflected on his team’s successful season and the road that led them back to the state tournament as the defending Michigan champions. He shared what it’s like carrying the expectations that come with being the team everyone wants to beat, while also giving listeners a behind-the-scenes look at the communication between the catcher and pitching coach during games.
Coach Hermes also walked us through one of the team’s biggest postseason moments. After dropping the opening game of the sectional tournament to Petoskey, the Miners regrouped, won two straight elimination games, including a dramatic walk-off victory, to capture the sectional championship and earn another trip to the state tournament.
Both interviews offer a great inside look at two successful Negaunee programs, the dedication of the players and coaches, and what lies ahead as they represent the Upper Peninsula on the state’s biggest Little League stage. Be sure to tune in for the full conversations and hear the stories behind both teams’ championship runs.
