Marquette, MI – August 11th, 2026 – For this week’s Big Local Sports Show, we welcomed a member of the U.P. Sports Hall of Fame and three-time state championship coach, Jeff Olson, for a conversation that covered much more than wins, championships, and a legendary coaching career.
SEGMENT ONE: EARLY LIFE & LOVE OF SPORTS
Long before the championships, records and decades spent on the sidelines, Jeff Olson was simply a kid from Marquette who loved to play sports. In the first segment, Olson took us back to his childhood, sharing stories about growing up with his brothers and how baseball, football, and basketball became such an important part of his life. He also reflected on the coaches who influenced him along the way and the lessons he learned from the people around him, experiences that helped shape his passion for athletics and eventually led him toward coaching.
SEGMENT TWO: COACHING CAREER & CHAMPIONSHIPS
From an 18-year-old beginning, his coaching journey to becoming one of the most respected coaches in U.P. sports history, Olson’s career is filled with stories, lessons, and unforgettable moments. We dove into his coaching career, including his time at Ishpeming High School, where Olson helped build one of the most successful football programs in the U.P. But his story isn’t simply about wins, championships, or records. Olson discussed the challenges he faced when he first arrived at Ishpeming, what separated his teams from the competition, and the coaching philosophies that helped shape his programs over the years.
He also reflected on one of the most meaningful experiences of his career, getting the opportunity to coach his own sons. We also talked about what it felt like to finally reach the top and win a state championship, and what those victories meant not only to Olson and his players, but to the entire Ishpeming community.
SEGMENT THREE: DO IT FOR DANIEL
As the conversation continued, the focus shifted from the football field to something much closer to home. Olson opened up about his family and the lasting legacy of his son, Daniel Olson, an Ishpeming standout athlete whose impact continues to be felt throughout the community.
Daniel’s story became the foundation for “Do It For Daniel,” a mission created to honor his memory while raising awareness about mental health, suicide prevention, and the importance of supporting those who may be struggling. For the Olson family, sharing Daniel’s story is deeply personal. But rather than keep that pain private, they have chosen to speak openly about their experience in hopes that Daniel’s story can reach others who need to hear it.
