Petoskey, MIDecember 1st, 2017 – The Marquette Redettes opened their season with a 44-34 victory against the Manton Rangers on 97.5 GTO.  The Redettes, coached by Ben Smith, looked to get off the mark with a win against the Rangers at the Petoskey Invitational. Marquette was able to win the tournament and looked to do the same thing with a victory tonight.

It was not the start the Redettes were looking for as Manton jumped out to a quick lead and Marquette was never able to sustain a long run. The Redettes were able to fight their way back but were never able to gain a lead. They would tie things up a couple times in the first half thanks to Maureen Miller who was able to get 11 points in the first two frames. For the Rangers it was all Jaden Wilder who had 17 points. The Rangers took a 23-21 lead over Marquette at the end of the first half.

The Redettes had a much better start in the second half. I don’t know what Ben Smith said to his team but they came out firing on all cylinders. Marquette started the half with a 16-0 run. The Rangers would not be able to get any points on the board for the first five minutes of the half.  The Redettes would outscore the Rangers 17-4 in the third quarter. The name of the game in the second half for Marquette was their shutdown defense. They held Manton to only 11 points in the second half.

The Marquette Redettes would move on to the championship game with a 44-34 victory over the Manton Rangers. Their opponent would still be decided, but it will be between Petoskey or Brighton. That game can be heard at 1:00 PM starting with pregame coverage on 97.5 GTO or online at gto.fm.
