Negaunee Miners Softball Team Defeats The Ishpeming Hematites 9-4 In First Game Of Double Header
- Updated: May 10, 2017

Negaunee, MI- May 10th, 2017- After a day where we got to take a look at the JV team for Negaunee we would resume with the varsity as the Miners would take on rival in the Ishpeming Hematites. They would play a double header today with the first game starting at 4:00 PM. The second game would start at 6:00 PM. As the Miners were looking for the sweep they knew it would be tough, any time these two teams get together in any sport its always a good game.
The first inning would be quiet for both teams, neither one would be able to get anyone across home plate. Both pitchers seemed to be dialed in and executing their pitches well. Negaunee would get on the scoreboard in the second inning. After another solid half inning of pitching and defense, the Miners were able to strand a Hematite base runner. In the bottom half of the inning, with two outs, Negaunee was able to drive one in taking a 1-0 lead. The third inning would be the same as the first inning with both teams being shut out as we were getting close to the halfway point of this game.
Ishpeming would threaten in the fourth inning getting a runner to third but with some great pitching she was stranded there. The Miners would add a couple more runs to their lead, due to a couple of miscues by the Hematites. Negaunee would take a 3-0 lead heading into the fifth inning. The top of the fifth would not be kind to the Miners. Ishpeming would tie the game up at 3-3 with three hits and two errors by Negaunee. Boy would the Miners respond in a big way after giving up the lead. They would drive across six runs on four hits, making it a 9-3 ball game. The Hematites would plate across a run in the top of the sixth, trying to cut into that deficit. And that would really be the last of the excitement as the Miners would shut the door and win this one 9-4.
