Marquette, MI – August 3rd, 2026 – After an eight-year stint in Detroit, the Tarik Skubal era has officially come to an end.
What began as the story of a ninth-round draft pick who worked his way through the Tigers organization has turned into one of the most impressive pitching careers in recent franchise history. Now, Skubal’s journey will continue in Los Angeles after the Tigers traded their ace to the Dodgers on Saturday night.
During his time in Detroit, Skubal developed into one of baseball’s premier pitchers. He leaves the Tigers as a two-time All-Star, two-time All-MLB First Team selection, two-time AL Cy Young Award winner and two-time AL ERA leader.
His 2024 campaign was arguably the highlight of his Detroit career. Skubal captured the American League pitching Triple Crown, leading the league in wins, strikeouts and ERA. He also became the AL’s strikeout leader that season while establishing himself as one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball.
Skubal finishes his Tigers career with 61 wins and 1,005 strikeouts. His career-high came when he struck out 14 batters in a single game.
Following the trade, Skubal took to Instagram to thank the city of Detroit, the Tigers organization and the fans who supported him throughout his eight years in the Motor City.
“Thank you for the last 8 years! Words can’t describe what this city has meant to me and my family. The support has never gone unnoticed and it’s something I’ll appreciate the rest of my life. To my teammates, coaches, staff, thank you for always pushing me to be the best version of myself. Detroit will forever have a special place in my heart.”
Now, the 29-year-old pending free agent heads to Los Angeles, where he will join a Dodgers team looking to win its third consecutive World Series championship.
Skubal will immediately become part of a star-studded rotation that already features some of baseball’s biggest names. He’ll join Yoshinobu Yamamoto who currently sits in 7th in ESPN National League 2026 CY Young predictor, along with Blake Snell, Shohei Ohtani and Tyler Glasnow.
In return for Skubal, Detroit received three prospects from Los Angeles: outfielder Zyhir Hope, the Dodgers’ No. 5 prospect; right-handed pitcher River Ryan, the organization’s No. 7 prospect; and right-handed pitcher Brady Smith, the Dodgers’ No. 17 prospect.
Skubal is expected to make his Dodgers debut tomorrow night at 8:05 p.m. when Los Angeles travels to Wrigley Field to take on the Chicago Cubs.
For Detroit, the focus now shifts toward rebuilding a rotation without the ace who had anchored it for the past several seasons. The Tigers’ current rotation is expected to feature Casey Mize, Framber Valdez, Troy Melton and Keider Montero. Jackson Jobe could also be nearing a return. Jobe, who last pitched May 28 before being placed on the 60-day injured list with an elbow injury, is scheduled to make a rehab start soon.
Detroit enters the next stretch of the season coming off an 11-0 blowout victory over the Athletics on Sunday. The win improved the Tigers to 54-58 and came in their first game since trading Skubal to Los Angeles.
The Tigers will return to action tomorrow night at 9:40 p.m. as they begin a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners.
Detroit’s eight-year run with Tarik Skubal comes to a close, ending a remarkable chapter for a pitcher who grew from a ninth-round draft pick into one of the best arms in baseball. Now, the question becomes what will the Tigers look like without their ace leading the way?
