Since then, Calhoun has taken another major step forward. Over the past several months, the Munising standout has continued to prove himself against some of the nation’s best young talent while competing on one of the premier grassroots basketball circuits in the country.

During our interview, Calhoun explained that he plays for Kevon Looney’s Wisconsin-based KL Power5 program, which competes on the Adidas 3Stripes Select Basketball (3SSB) circuit. According to the organization’s website, 3SSB serves as Adidas Basketball’s premier grassroots platform for boys and girls ages 12-18 who aspire to compete at the next level. The circuit features elite camps, showcases, and tournaments throughout the year, bringing together many of the country’s top youth basketball players.

Calhoun, a member of the Class of 2031, spent the summer competing against players a year older than him, but the age difference didn’t slow him down. Instead, Calhoun consistently proved he belonged among the nation’s elite while traveling across the country to compete in top-level events. That success helped KL Power5 qualify for the Jr. 3SSB 8th Grade National Championship, an invite-only tournament featuring many of the nation’s top youth basketball teams. Teams earn their spot by accumulating points at mandatory regional events, winning open qualifying tournaments, or receiving at-large bids before advancing to the national championship, which begins with pool play before transitioning into a single-elimination bracket.

Held June 26-28th at the Rock Hill Sports & Event Center in Rock Hill, South Carolina, the national championship brought together the best teams from across the country. KL Power5 wasted little time making its presence known, opening the tournament with a dominant 43-19 victory. While complete game scores from the remainder of the event were not publicly available, the team rolled through pool play and entered the semifinals with a perfect 4-0 record.

In the semifinals, KL Power5 squared off against Slow Grind, the program founded by former NBA All-Star, Isaiah Thomas. The undefeated run continued as KL Power5 earned a trip to the championship game with a national title on the line. Waiting in the finals was Wisconsin-based Davis Brothers Elite, the nation’s No. 7-ranked team. The roster featured Kidman Knueppel, the younger brother of the Charlotte Hornets guard, Kon Knueppel. KL Power5 rose to the occasion, defeating Davis Brothers Elite 60-51 to finish a perfect 6-0 weekend and capture the Jr. 3SSB 8th Grade National Championship.

Calhoun’s outstanding play throughout the tournament earned him All-Tournament Team honors alongside teammates Michael Grzesk and Sheldon Yarbrough. KL Power5’s Justin Cato, who poured in 22 points in the championship game, was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

The championship performance also helped boost Calhoun’s national profile. Shortly after the tournament, Coast2Coast Preps released its updated Class of 2031 national rankings, with Calhoun climbing to No. 2 in the country, further cementing his status as one of the premier young players in the nation. His summer success is only the latest chapter in what continues to be a rapidly growing basketball journey.

This fall, Calhoun will continue that journey at the Milwaukee Academy of Science, where he will have another opportunity to develop against high-level competition. Interest in the rising star continues to grow, with prep schools from across the country, and Overtime Elite programs known for developing future NBA talent, already taking notice.
