Marquette, MI – April 9th, 2026 – At 6’4″ and still in seventh grade, Braylin Calhoun of Munising, Michigan is already turning heads, and his story is only getting started.
Calhoun joined us in the studio and it quickly became clear this isn’t your typical young athlete. His journey began at just 11 months old when he first picked up a basketball and started dunking on a mini hoop. By kindergarten, he wasn’t just playing, he was competing up on a third-grade team, showing flashes of the talent that’s now beginning to explode on a bigger stage.
For years, Calhoun dreamed of the NFL, but in sixth grade everything changed. He shifted his focus to basketball, and the results were immediate. By the summer before seventh grade, he threw down his first real dunk, a moment that symbolized just how quickly his game was evolving.
Recently, at the Huffman Basketball Camp Top 40, Calhoun went toe-to-toe with high school players and didn’t just hold his own, he stood out. He then attended the Pangos All-American Camp, which he calls the true turning point of his journey. Dominating the competition, Calhoun earned MVP honors and caught the attention of nearly 20 programs. That’s when, he says, “it turned into a business.” Click here to view his 247Sports profile. He’s one of the few middle schoolers in the country to already have one.
Behind the rising star is a strong support system. Calhoun spoke about his relationship with mentor Ant Wright, a former Michigan standout who helped shape his mindset both on and off the court. He calls Wright a “life guy”, someone he can lean on beyond basketball. That foundation starts at home as well, where his mother, a former college player, introduced him to the game and continues to fuel his drive to succeed.
During the offseason, Calhoun travels nearly every weekend to Milwaukee, training and competing in a high-level league through Front Page Sports on the Power 5 circuit. He’s playing on an Adidas 3SSB elite invite team, facing top-tier competition across the country, including events as far as California. One of the wildest moments of his young career came during a tournament in Detroit, where he matched up against a team coached by two-time NBA champion, Rajon Rondo, who was leading his son’s team. Playing up a level in front of a packed, high-energy crowd, he embraced the challenge, and the experience only fueled his growing confidence.
Even college basketball is starting to take notice, despite him still being in middle school. Calhoun shared a story about how national championship-winning coach, Dusty May, ended up following him on social media. That’s just a glimpse into how quickly his name is spreading. Next up, a major move: Calhoun is heading to Milwaukee to attend the Milwaukee Academy of Science, continuing to elevate his game. With interest already coming from prep schools across the country and Overtime Elite programs known for producing NBA talent, his future is wide open.
