Redmen Lose Game One of Doubleheader Against Negaunee on Fox Sports Marquette
- Updated: May 10, 2021
Negaunee, MI – May 10, 2021 – The Marquette Redmen took on cross-town rivals, Negaunee Miners in varsity baseball action Monday afternoon. The game was broadcast live on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9!
The Miners were first to bat and the lead off man, Howard Johnson fell victim to a 5-3 put-out. Redmen pitcher Erik Johnson would then walk the second and third hitters to put a runner in scoring position. Negaunee’s Matthew Peters would hit in Bellanger off a fielder’s choice to give Negaunee the 1-0 lead.

Redmen v Miners
The second inning scoring started when Marquette’s Erik Johnson walked Eli VanBuren to first. The number nine hitter, Owen Debelak was able to hit a single and move VanBuren to scoring position. The Miner’s Howard Johnson would reach first off an error and load up the bases. Brenten Ballenger would bring in two runs off a double and bring the score to, 3-0 in favor of Negaunee. Miner pitcher Kieth Juidicy would help his case by bringing in two runs off a single, and bring the lead to 5-0 to end the half.
Marquette had trouble getting their bats going as their lead off and second hitters would get out. Third basemen Alex Applekamp would show signs of life for the Redmen hitting a triple. However the next hitter wouldn’t be able to bring him home to end the second inning.
Marquette would make a pitching change from Erik Johnson to Peter VandenAvond. VandenAvond would throw Negaunee’s Anderson into a ground ball out to start the third and end the half without allowing a run and only one hit.
The Redmen offense would finally be able to get on the board after a shaky start in their half of the third. Marquette’s Erik Johnson would get on base off a bunt single. Brady Wright would stand in the box next, and would allow Johnson to steal second. Negaunee’s Juidicy would walk Wright with a wild pitch as the final ball that would also allow Johnson to take third. Redmen Justin Wenk would make contact and drive home two runs off a double to close their deficit to, 5-2.
Negaunee’s Johnson would hit a single and steal second and third, opening the bases for VandenAvond to walk Bellanger and Juidicy. With the bases loaded Negaunee catcher Branden Noskey would hit Johnson home off a single. Anderson for the Miners would hit the ball back to the mound, striking VandenAvond and reaching first off the RBI fielder’s choice. Negaunee would take the lead 7-2 before the final two batters struck out to end the top half of the fourth.

Marquette v Negaunee
The Redmen pitcher VandonAvond did a great job working himself out of a bases loaded scenario. Able to make a 1-2 put-out play at home with two outs, and make Negaunee’s Peters hit a shallow fly ball brought in by the Redmen second basemen. Marquette was able to strand 10 Miner’s on base through five innings.
Marquette would start to rally in the fifth inning with VandenAvond hitting a single. That would bring Johnson up to bat for the Redmen. VandenAvond would steal second, and an error by the Miner catcher would allow him to steal home. Johnson would end up being walked to first bringing Wright up to bat. Brady Wright would get himself a stand-up RBI triple, and bring the score to 7-4 in favor of the Miners.
The final inning would be a quick one, up and down, and Kieth Juidicy and the Miners were able to get their first win of the year beating the Redmen, 7-4.
