Redmen Basketball Wins 64-59 Over the Gaylord Blue Devils

Marquette, MIFebruary 16, 2019 – The Marquette Redmen Basketball team defeated the Gaylord Blue Devils 64-59 at home on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9. It was Senior Day today for the Redmen. Marquette honored their senior players this afternoon before tip off.

Marius Grazulis opened up the final regular season home game with a triple, followed by a Raffy Millado bucket to jump out to 5-0 early in the first quarter.

The Blue Devils caught up quickly and pulled out front at 9-7. A little confusion about an unlisted Blue Devil led to a team technical foul, giving Grazulis a chance to reclaim the lead at the line for a score of 11-9.

There was a little back and forth over the course of the final minutes of the quarter, and the score was all tied up at 15-15 at the buzzer.

The second quarter opened up with a few early buckets from the Redmen and Marquette took an early lead at 22-17.

The Redmen remained in control and a Luke Ogea three-point play extended the Redmen lead to 27-21.

A Liam Darr three-pointer followed by a Bryce Brazeau bucket resulted in a nine-point lead, drawing cheers from the student section. This flurry of activity was the start of a swing in momentum in favor of Marquette.

The Redmen continued full steam ahead and cultivated a 13-point lead going into the half with a score of 38-25.

The Blue Devils took the reins from the Redmen in the third quarter, encroaching on the Redmen lead and shifting the momentum in their favor.

Gaylord got within one possession of Marquette, but the Redmen clung to their lead and went into the final quarter of play with a score of 48-43.

The Redmen did not waste any time early in the fourth quarter. The momentum of this game was like a pendulum, and luckily the swing in the final minutes went the way of the Redmen.

A Luke Ogea triple followed by a Drew Wyble steal and an Ethan Martysz lay-up brought the Redmen lead back out to nine points with a score of 55-46.

Gaylord stayed within striking distance, never letting Marquette quite get a comfortable lead. It was no problem for the Redmen though, and this 64-59 victory marks the 15th win of the season for Marquette.

The Redmen will be back in action on Monday, February 18th against Escanaba on 103 FXD. The pregame show starts at 7:00 pm, tip off is at 7:30 pm.
