Redmen Basketball Defeats Gladstone Braves 70-58

Gladstone, MIFebruary 11, 2020 – The Marquette Redmen Varsity Basketball team emerged victorious over the Gladstone Braves tonight on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9.

The Redmen inched one step closer to an outright Great Northern Conference (GNC) title with their 70-58 victory over the Braves tonight. Their GNC record improves to 6-1 on the season.

Kam Karp struck first for the Redmen with a steal and a bucket for a 2-0 lead. Gladstone stayed with Marquette, tying it up at 4-4 quickly. A Lincoln Sager triple put the Redmen up 7-4 as Marquette began to pull away slightly in the early going.

Ty Lotterman went one for two at the line and then followed that up with an impressive dunk before taking a seat for the rest of the period, two fouls under his belt in the first.

Karp put up a triple to help the Redmen to a 13-6 lead over the Braves with just under three minutes to go. A Sager double in the final seconds brought the score to 17-8. The Braves responded with a triple, but Drew Wyble was able to tip the ball in just before the buzzer to make it 19-11 going into the second period.

An early John Thomson bucket in the second helped the Redmen to a nine-point lead in the early moments of the period. Karp followed up going two for two at the line. He then found Collin Hicks who put up a long triple to make it a double digit lead for the Redmen, the score 27-13.

A 5-0 run from the Braves cut the Redmen lead to 27-18. A flurry of scoring closed out the half with a Justin Jurmu triple helping to protect a double digit Marquette lead. The score was 34-24 at the buzzer.

The Braves stayed with the Redmen in the early going of the second half to put a little pressure on Marquette after a dominant first half. Gladstone’s Cam Ballard helped along a whopping 9-0 run for the Braves to cut their deficit to one point behind the Redmen. Kam Karp went two for two at the line to give Marquette a little breathing room with a 36-33 lead.

Gladstone was able to stay within six points of the Redmen, the score 49-43 going into the fourth period.

The energy turned frenetic as the Redmen looked to keep the Braves contained following their impressive third quarter performance. Gladstone got within three points with less than three minutes to go in the game. Karp, with ice in his veins, went two for two at the line as his free throw game remained solid throughout the night.

Karp put up another two at the line to help give the Redmen a nine-point lead, creating enough distance late in the quarter to help solidify their 70-58 victory over the Braves and keep an outright GNC title bid alive.
