Redmen Basketball Bests Houghton Gremlins 62-41

Marquette, MI – January 28, 2020 – The Marquette Redmen Varsity Basketball team defeated the Houghton Gremlins 62-41 in a one-sided match-up tonight on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9.
The Redmen started the first quarter with a little 4-0 run to get things going. A Kam Karp triple helped extend that lead to seven, the score at 9-2 over the Gremlins with four minutes to go.
Ty Lotterman put up a triple as well to make it 12-2 as Marquette cruised to a cushy lead in the early going. Houghton could not seem to find a foothold against an energetic Redmen team. Marquette allowed a few Gremlin points to slide through before the buzzer, but stayed well out front at 18-7 in a severely lopsided first period.
The Redmen were impossible to beat tonight.
The Gremlins hacked away at their deficit, getting within seven points at one point in the early moments of the second quarter. The Houghton effort wasn’t strong enough though. Another triple from Karp put the score at 30-17 with over two minutes to go. The Gremlins were no match for a blazing Redmen squad as Marquette would take a 36-20 lead into the second half.
John Thomson wasted no time in the third quarter, putting up a bucket to bring the score to 38-20. It didn’t take long for the Redmen to jump out to a 26-point lead over the Gremlins, Houghton finding no vulnerability in Marquette’s armor tonight. The Redmen carried a 50-27 lead into the final quarter of play.
Lotterman, with 18 points in the game, put up a double to help put the Redmen out at 54-29 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The Redmen ran down the clock, protecting their considerable lead, and solidifying a seemingly preordained victory in a dominating performance from start to finish. The Redmen improve to 9-3 overall on the season.
The Redmen will be back on Thursday, January 30th against the Kingsford Flivvers on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9. Tune in at 6:15 for the pregame show, tip off is at 6:45 pm.
