Redettes Shoulder 49-40 Loss Against #1 Menominee Maroons

Marquette, MIJanuary 31, 2020 – The Marquette Redettes Varsity Basketball team lost 49-40 in a tough battle against the Menominee Maroons tonight on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9.

The opening minutes of the game remained scoreless, but the Maroons struck first to end the drought. Sofia van den Ende answered right away to tie it up at 2-2. Play progressed to a 7-5 Maroons lead with three minutes to go. Menominee went on a 6-0 run to distance themselves from the Redettes, the score 12-5 and two minutes left in the period.

Aspen Michelin went one for two at the line to improve Marquette to 12-6 behind the Maroons. Michelin followed up with a bucket just before the buzzer to slash their deficit to 12-8 going into the second period, hanging tough with the number one team in the Upper Peninsula.

Maddie Carter put up a double to open the second quarter, the Redettes coming out aggressive to start. The Maroons jumped back out to an eight-point lead and forced a turnover to regain control. At 20-10 behind Menominee, the Redettes called a time out to regroup.

Sofia van den Ende put a stop to the bleeding with a bucket to make the score 22-12. Clarissa Remillard followed up with a jumper to continue to hack away at their deficit. Menominee went two for two at the line to double back up, but Michelin answered right back with two.

It was the Maroons’ show for the rest of the period as Marquette began to struggle offensively. Menominee seemed to have an answer for every move the Redettes made as the quarter progressed. They took a 14-point lead, the score 30-16, going into halftime.

The Redettes hosted the Menominee Maroons tonight.

Menominee quickly doubled up on Marquette once again in the opening moments of the third quarter. The Redettes showed some life, however, as Maria Millado drove to the net to help Marquette get within 12 points of the Maroons. Michelin followed up with a bucket to get within 10. A Rayna Warchock triple put the Redettes at 34-26, their deficit slashed to single digits as Marquette found their rhythm in a strong third quarter showing.

The Redettes found their mojo offensively, outscoring Menominee 13-7 in the third. Some tough Marquette defense put a stop to some Menominee answers to help keep the Maroons at bay. The Redettes stayed within eight points, the score 37-29 going into the final period of play.

The Maroons jumped back out to an 11-point lead in the early going of the fourth quarter. A Maddie Carter bucket put the Redettes back within single digits. Michelin followed up with a massive block to reject a Maroons answer.

Menominee’s Emma Anderson put up a clutch triple to all but ice the game. A Carter double followed by a Millado steal and lay up got the Redettes once again within eight points. The Redettes’ effort was spirited, but just not quite enough as the Maroons took home the 49-40 victory tonight.
