The Redettes won the last two Petoskey Invitationals, and enjoyed the advantage of winning 50-31 in their season opener against Gladstone. But, Brighton’s Sophie Dziekan scored the buzzer-beating bucket to seal the deal for the Bulldogs.

The first half showcased two very different sides of the Redettes.
Marquette was firmly in control in the first quarter with a 15-9 lead at the buzzer. Marquette’s Avery Ledy had a hefty 9 points to start off the game.
The second quarter was a different story.
Marquette struggled offensively as the Bulldogs came roaring back with a high turnover rate and a 19-18 lead over the Redettes during the first half of the second quarter.
Avery Ledy went two for two, and Madison Carter went four for four at the line to help keep the Bulldogs at bay. Though Marquette was able to tie up the game at 24-24 going into the half, they struggled to find the momentum they had at the start.
It was a tight but energetic third quarter. Marquette’s Madison Carter scored a three-pointer for a score of 38-35, the biggest lead of the half. The period ended, however, with Brighton tying it back up at 38-38.
The claustrophobic fourth quarter made it impossible for the Redettes to gain a comfortable lead. Sydney Kivi had two successful free throws for a score of 41-40, and less than two minutes to spare.
The game was all tied up at 42-42 with less than 30 seconds to go.
Marquette Head Coach Ben Smith tried to call a time out as Brighton hit the winning shot, but the officials didn’t see him.
It was a heartbreaking loss for the Redettes, but they’ll be back to take on the winner of the Petoskey vs Manton game on Saturday, December 8th. Pregame starts at 11:30 am and tip off is at 12:00 pm on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9.
