Redettes Basketball Cruises to Semifinals with 59-24 Victory Over Alpena
- Updated: March 4, 2019

Marquette, MI – March 4, 2019 – The Marquette Redettes Varsity Basketball team claims the district quarterfinals victory, defeating Alpena 59-24 tonight on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9.
The Redettes were firing on all cylinders this evening with defense, offense, and general teamwork all playing their parts in a huge district quarterfinals victory for Marquette.
An immediate basket off the tip for the Redettes kicked off a 10-0 run at the start of the first quarter. Alpena finally got on the board with a 4-0 run and four minutes to go. The Redettes held on to the lead, but not before the Wildcats slashed their deficit to five, trailing Marquette 12-7 at the buzzer.
The second quarter did not start out quite so well for the Redettes. The Wildcats were able to get within one possession early on after a few free throws brought the score to 12-9.
It didn’t take long for the Redettes to find their footing though. Marquette muscled their way to a 10-0 run to take control of the game. First, a couple of Madison Carter buckets got the Redettes on the board. A Sydney Kivi triple was followed by an Aspen Michelin double in short order. Avery Ledy rounded things out with a huge triple for a score of 22-9.
The Redettes’ defense put a stop to an Alpena comeback and closed out the first half with a 24-11 lead.
The second half got off to a good start with several turnovers resulting in a quick 4-0 run. A couple of Aspen Michelin steals, one coupled with a layup, helped bring the Redettes to a 28-11 lead.
The rest of the third quarter could not have been much bigger for Marquette. They went into the final quarter of play with a massive 38-16 lead over the Wildcats.
Madison Carter continued to have herself a night, doing a little of everything and helping the Redettes extend their lead early in the final quarter.
Freshman Redette Maria Milado, called up for playoffs, went two for two and one for two in back to back free throws for a score of 51-20.
Marquette’s defense remained impenetrable, and Alpena struggled to find any traction offensively. The 59-24 victory keeps the Redettes alive and well in district playoff action.
Tune in for more Redettes action as they take on TC Central on Wednesday, March 6th in district semifinal action. Tip off is at 6:00 pm, tune in to Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9 at 5:30 pm for the pregame show.
